Starting his second year on The Sentry, junior Mason Wolverton is excited to transition into his new role of the Copy Editor this year. He is very passionate about writing and enjoys his time on the newspaper.

“I joined The Sentry because I like to write, and maybe I want to go into journalism someday, and it’s a cool class,” Wolverton said.

Along with being a strong writer, he is a talented athlete as well. He runs cross country and track year round for our school. Wolverton is also a passionate soccer fan, showing his support for the Premier League across the pond.

“I’m a Liverpool fan—Liverpool FC in England,” Wolverton said. “[My favorite player is] fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Wolverton said.

Along with being a soccer fan, Wolverton also likes to watch the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Football League (NFL).

“[For] basketball, I like the Wizards. More so, I just kind of watch the NBA because the Wizards are so bad. [For football], I like the Bengals because my parents are from Cincinnati,” Wolverton said.

Last summer, Wolverton ventured far from Cincinnati to the Mediterranean coast with his family. He visited Italy and traveled through Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan.

“I liked Venice the most. We stayed off on the East side and it was more peaceful,” Wolverton said.

Wolverton especially liked Italy because he learned about it in his AP European History class last year, which was one of his favorite classes. He was fascinated with the mix of ancient and modern elements in the Italian cities.

“Italy is super cool and I learned a lot about the Renaissance, which was in Florence, and I got to see a lot of art and architecture,” Wolverton said.

The Italian culture heavily appealed to Wolverton; however, he thought the Italian food lacked variety.

“[The food] is all pretty similar so I did kind of get sick of it by the end but it is definitely really good,” Wolverton said.

When he is not running a race or traveling to Italy, Wolverton definitely opts for TV shows over movies to relax.

“I watch a bunch of different shows,” Wolverton said.

Wolverton’s favorite is Better Call Saul, which is the sequel to Breaking Bad. He also enjoys several other shows like Succession and Designated Survivor.

As Wolverton moves into his new role this year on The Sentry, he is looking forward to writing in the Sports and News sections.

“[News] is just really cool to dig deep and investigate stuff,” Wolverton said.

The Sentry is excited to have Wolverton returning to the staff this year as Copy Editor. He is a talented writer who is destined for success as a student journalist.

Entering his sophomore year at school and his first year with The Sentry, Ryan Pericak is a man of many interests. Most importantly, Pericak is an avid golfer. If you don’t find him competing for our school, he’s often partaking in another tournament. For Pericak, golfing is a lifelong activity—he’s been playing since he was just 4 years old, and he doesn’t plan on stopping.

“I’ve always been pretty good at it, and it’s fun to score well,” Pericak said.

Golfing has taken him to several interesting places, his favorite being Hawaii.

“We went a couple years ago, and it was really beautiful,” Pericak said.

However, this summer, the Pericaks packed their bags and went east, where they ended up in Croatia. They met up with a couple relatives, since his dad’s side of the family is from the Balkan country.

“We flew into Dubrovnik, which is right on the Adriatic, and it’s beautiful,” Pericak said.

With his love of traveling, Pericak would love to live in California one day. He enjoys the weather and the golf courses. Plus, it’s easy to access another one of his hobbies: skiing.

“It’s fun going down the hill and off jumps,” Pericak said.

Pericak had Ms. Wiedemann—the teacher behind our class—in ninth grade, which convinced him to join The Sentry. He’s looking forward to writing an array of articles for the paper.

“I want to write about what’s going on at the school, sports and things in the community,” Pericak said.

Pericak is very informed about our school’s events; he’s on the Principal’s Advisory Board, which is one of his most time-consuming extracurriculars.

“We meet with Dr. Clark every couple weeks and talk with him about what we should improve at Yorktown, what’s going well and what we should change,” Pericak said.

Pericak enjoys watching a variety of different sports. His dad’s side is from Buffalo (after Croatia), so he roots for Josh Allen and the Bills His mom’s side is from Chicago, so he pulls for the Cubs in baseball. For his favorite sport, golf, he loves Viktor Hovland.

“He’s from Norway and is really cool. He’s got a great swing,” Pericak said.

For college, Pericak is interested in going out of state (potentially California), but he also likes his in-state options.

“My sister goes [to the University of Virginia], and she really likes it,” Pericak said.

For entertainment, Pericak loves country music. And his favorite show is Modern Family, his favorite character being Phil Dunphy, the dad.

When it comes to eating, Pericak loves fish. But he isn’t afraid to try new things, either. Another memorable dish for him was a pork plate in Croatia.

“They cook it for a few hours, and then it’s super tender and nice,” Pericak said.

Pericak’s favorite classes this year have been The Sentry and AP World. Hopefully he isn’t just saying that for the interview. We’re very excited to have the sophomore on staff this year and to see him grow as a writer.
