In the past 20 years, stockings have become a worldwide tradition. Originally, children would receive fruits and nuts in their stockings. Now children receive small toys and a variety of candies. As expectations for the finest gifts rise, so do the need for the best stocking stuffers. So here’s what people actually want in their stockings this holiday season.

The tradition of stocking stuffers dates back to early 19th century Europe. Originally, children left their stockings out because Saint Nicholas was said to leave fruit, nuts or small treats for well behaved children as an act of gratitude.

The tradition of stockings still brings families together all over the world. Stockings are usually the first to be opened on Christmas morning which sets a joyous mood for the holiday.

Most people like to receive stockings because they’re more personal than larger gifts. Stockings create a sense of excitement; opening a stocking feels like discovering multiple little surprises all at once. For children stockings are magical and bring a sort of delightful nostalgia for adults!

Stockings are a reminder that the holidays are about connection and joy rather than large expensive gifts.

But what do people actually want?

Children often enjoy small toys in their stockings. Little girls and boys both enjoy various sweets. Most grocery stores offer small bags of holiday themed candies, perfect for stockings.

Other good gender neutral gifts for kids include any type of squishy fidgets, stuffed animal key chains and if approved mini thinking putty or slime.

Teenagers on the other hand may want more practical gifts. Tech related gifts can include chargers, air tags and wireless headphones.

When shopping for a family member or loved one try to find something small, but specific to a particular interest. For example, if you know someone who really enjoys reading, get them a mini reading light.

Parents want fun stocking stuffers too! Many adults enjoy basic but useful gifts. These include socks, gloves and soaps. You can also make them something by hand such as a handwritten card or a framed photo of your family.

Don’t forget about your pets. Your cat, dog or hamster would love a new toy. Extra points if it’s holiday themed.

Now go off and continue to keep stockings fun and exciting. Happy gift giving!
