As the new year approaches, it comes time to recycle the old and bring in the new. 2026 is no different and is sure to be filled with fresh starts. As the year comes to a close, it is a good time to reflect on trends that might be better left behind.
First on this list of trends to drop are the overhyped micro-dramas that take hold of our social media. From celebrity breakup drama to online feuds between creators, they’re in the spotlight for a week and are forgotten about once their seven days of fame come to a close. While entertaining, these little online feuds will eventually start to bore in the new year.
Another trend to ditch is the generic, stereotypical homes and interior design that lack personality. With 2026 comes interior design with personal charm replacing the clean, spotless spaces lacking personality. The modern, all-white homes with a spotless and geometric look will cycle out of the spotlight, as they lack the personality for a home to truly feel like a home.
The 24/7 hustle mentality should leave with 2025. Romanticizing healthy habits does sound beneficial in theory, but can actually be detrimental to many consumers of this content. Especially for high schoolers, rest isn’t laziness; it’s necessary as we are already under an immense workload and pressures. High school is stressful enough without forcing ourselves to be productive every second.
Another retired trend in 2026 is fast fashion fueled by social media’s micro trends that recycle out in a month. Fast fashion, such as brands like Temu, or shopping through apps like Tiktok, are out. Buying a ton of clothes that fall apart in a week helps no one. Quality over quantity is the new mindset and is surely a trend worth keeping.
Overconsumption caused by the cycle of rotating social media trends needs to go, as buying pointless items that only clutter our space is a waste of money. We don’t need ten different water bottles, all that come in and out of trend in a week’s time.
As we close the chapter on the 2025 year, it’s clear that not every trend is meant to have a place in 2026. From performative fast-fashion hauls, to a new weekly viral scandal, these trends that distract us from what is truly important do not deserve the spotlight in 2026. The trends we ditch with 2025 say just as much about the trends we embrace in 2026.
