During the holiday season, many senior citizens are stuck at home by themselves. Their families may be unable to visit them or they cannot make it out to see relatives due to difficulty traveling. This leaves thousands of seniors alone during a time that emphasizes connection, leading to feelings of isolation and depression. However, this year, you can help bring some holiday joy to seniors in your community who are on their own by doing these activities.

A great way to spread holiday cheer to a senior is helping them decorate their space. Ask them what their favorite decorations are and spark a conversation. Decorations such as ornaments or holiday themed photos often cause memories to be relieved and can help someone feel connected to their family and friends. Listen to their stories and share your own as you go. Whether it is in an apartment, room or assisted living home, putting up decorations is a meaningful, interactive way to bring holiday cheer.

Another option, baking cookies or doing simple crafts is a fun and hands-on way to spend time together. Making ornaments or gingerbread is easy, and not taxing on the mind or body. The activities are straightforward, and when you are finished you will have something tangible to commemorate the day.

Having a holiday dinner is one of the most important memories for a lot of people. Bring or cook holiday favorites and sit down to have a cheerful meal. Food unites people and helps connections flourish. It presents an opportunity to come together and share memories.

A final way to bring the holidays to seniors is volunteering. A great place to volunteer your time is with the Arlington Neighborhood Village. They offer open visits for the community to spend time with those who are independent. If you have a family member who is in an assisted living home, offer to join them and their friends this holiday season.

Simply showing up for seniors during the holidays brings joy and light to their day. Let them know you care and demonstrate your cheer. Happy holidays Patriots!
