Special Education Teacher Charlie Scarborough Departs After Three Years

Charlie Scarborough is a special education teacher who teaches a variety of subjects from history to physics. He has been at our school for three years and has made a great impact on the student body. Now moving on to a new stage in life, Scarborough has decided to move to Minnesota and settle down.

Observing growth from his students has been the highlight of his career. Helping his students prepare for tests, understand different concepts, and overcome challenges has made teaching rewarding. Over three years, Scarborough has enjoyed his time at our school, encouraging his students to achieve “light bulb moments.”

“That’s what really makes me want to come to work every day… seeing those students… progress and feel proud of themselves when they do figure something out,” Scarborough said.

Scarborough also went to one of his students’ soccer games over the weekend. This connection with one of his students outside of school was really impactful for him.

“I don’t usually go to a lot of sporting events because I haven’t had too many students playing sports here at Yorktown in my classes, but I came to one of his soccer games, and he was really happy to see me…it’s good to see him and what he’s passionate about outside of the classroom,” Scarborough said.

Leaving has been a bittersweet feeling for Scarborough as he went to our school and graduated in the class of 2017. He originally intended to leave last year, but chose to stay one more year. Staying the extra year has allowed him to round things out in Arlington, as it is not likely he will be back.

Scarborough is excited to move on to teaching his own class, instead of co-teaching. He will be moving back to the elementary school setting in Minnesota.

“There’s obviously been some pretty tough events for the city [St. Paul, Minnesota] and in the recent five years that have been all over the news… I think to myself that’s really shown the resilience of a lot of the people there and how they come together.” Scarborough said.

Minnesota is a place where you can be a part of something bigger than yourself and help others. Scarborough feels proud to be a part of that community.

As he leaves our school, Scarborough has made an impact on many students’ lives. In Minnesota, he will be working in a kindergarten class with kids in the autism program. Trying to replicate the same community he had here.
