Late Students: Are Their Excuses Valid?

When the bell rings between classes, the halls should be empty, each student in their seat in class. However, you will often find students still lurking in the halls after the passing period. The reasons why they are not in class vary and sometimes are not necessarily valid. Teachers and staff expect students to have enough time to get from class to class, however, some may think more time is needed during passing period.

When it comes to being late to school, many students admitted that they tend to sleep in most mornings or simply have poor time management. Some students also come late due to appointments. While these reasons are more valid, a couple students admitted that they are late in the mornings because they went to get Starbucks. Many other students also had this reason or that they chose to skip and hang out with their friends.

As well as being late to school in the morning, some students are late to class for similar reasons. Many simply believe that making it on time to class is not enforced or required. These students choose to hangout with their friends in the halls. A couple of students, however, claim the bathroom lines are insanely long. This is a huge issue and even with the numerous bathrooms, there is not enough time for every student to go during passing periods. With the rule of not using the restroom at the beginning of each class, passing periods is a valuable time, but with these lines students end up late to class. Though it may be worth it in the end instead of going straight to class and having to wait to leave for the restroom.

When walking the halls after the bell rang for class, many students were found wandering the halls. These students were interviewed as to why they were late and the majority simply chose to hang out in the halls with friends instead of going to class. Besides these class skippers, some students had more valid reasons such as appointments, talking to teachers or sleeping in late.

Our school’s students are mostly on time except for a few who choose friends and Starbucks over class. A couple miss due to more valid reasons such as appointments, long bathroom lines or poor time management. While the reasons vary, most of them are not completely valid and with our lengthy passing period, students should be in class on time.
