Being a picky eater is an unfortunate experience for that person and the people around them. Everyone dislikes certain foods, but being extremely picky just ruins the vibe. They miss out on all sorts of food, and are constantly upset by chefs forgetting to alter their order to their liking. However, pickiness might not be that person’s fault or it might not even be pickiness at all.
Being picky is being excessively careful and selective of what you eat, and being really hard to please. Pickiness is going to a restaurant, ordering a burger and then removing every topping until there is just meat and a bun. There is nothing wrong with wanting a plain burger but disliking everything else is too far. Disliking a whole type of cuisine is also too far. For example, It’s virtually impossible to despise all Italian food despite there being so many parts. Disliking pizza is understandable, but hating all Italian food is just wrong.
“I don’t really like seafood,” junior Roman Sandoli said.
This is a brutal take that completely cuts off all food from under the sea to Sandoli’s food rotation. This also cuts off a major part of almost all cuisines.
“No fish, no sushi, I don’t like any of that,” Sandoli said.
Sandoli is dealing in absolutes, ones that leave no room for exceptions. This is the definition of a picky eater: someone who dislikes a whole genre of food and stubbornly can’t compromise within that genre.
When asked what he would order at a restaurant that only serves seafood:
“I’ll starve,” Sandoli said.
Choosing to starve rather than to try something they might dislike is absurd and shows the truly obscene qualities of a picky eater.
However, pickiness might not be that person’s fault. Choosing not to consume certain foods because of a diet or wishing to entertain a healthier lifestyle is not being picky. That’s being health-conscious. Allergies or any sort of health related issue, like being lactose intolerant, obviously does not qualify as being picky either. Just because people have allergies does not mean that they can’t be picky eaters though. They could be picky about a food completely unrelated to those allergies.
Being a picky eater is an undesirable quality to have. You miss out on different cultural food and the experience that goes along with it. It’s understandable to not enjoy some foods, everyone has foods they dislike. But writing off whole cuisines without thoroughly searching for something you enjoy is truly unacceptable.
