Marjorie Kohlberg: Much More Than a Teacher

Marjorie Kohlberg: Much More Than a Teacher

Everyone is now getting ready for summer, but we cannot forget those who will not be returning for the 2015-2016 school year. Marjorie Kohlberg, the speech therapist here at Yorktown, will be retiring after twelve long, memorable years.

Kohlberg has nothing but kind bones in her body and will be greatly missed in the Yorktown Community. She has been helping students articulate sounds and words correctly, eliminate stuttering, improve their receptive language skills, help them to communicate effectively and learn social skills. Kohlberg also started the very successful Club Café that builds friendships among a variety of students.

Kohlberg says she will miss the teachers and students, but is very happy with her time at Yorktown.

“The students are fabulous to work with. I get such joy from helping them,” Kohlberg said.

Through a kaleidoscopic range of emotion, Kohlberg will be leaving the crowded hallways and lunchroom chatter and plans to spend time in retirement with her future grandson. But the excitement will not stop there. Kohlberg intends to maintain an active lifestyle after retirement.

“I plan to travel, learn to play bridge, hike, ski, practice yoga, read, garden and have fun. I may tutor or substitute so I get to work with students. I love teaching! I am also a certified Reading Recovery Teacher so I may tutor younger children and help them read better,” Kohlberg said.

Kohlberg has been at Yorktown for 12 years, Virginia for 13, and she has taught for 31 years and loved every moment of it. She started teaching simply because she loves helping others, and found herself loving the classroom feel.

“When a student tells me that I have made a difference in their life it is so rewarding,” Kohlberg said.

She certainly has impacted the Yorktown community and teachers and students have nothing but nice things to say about her.

Fellow New Yorker and yoga lover, Jasmine Welgoss, has developed a special connection with Kohlberg and will miss teaching with her.

“I’m going to miss her so much and everything she’s done for the school and for individual students. She’s helped students communicate and helped them through their high school experience. She’s been a great overall person in our special Ed department,” Welgoss said.

Kohlberg’s presence will be missed at Yorktown, and Yorktown thanks her for all she’s done.
