Christmas Classics to Watch This Year

Christmas Classics to Watch This Year

An essential part of the holiday season is cozying up by the fire and watching Christmas movies. Since the production of the first Christmas movie in 1898, a variety of these films have been produced. An incredible Christmas movie is hard to find, but you can never go wrong with these six.

6. Frosty the Snowman

Some may say this 1969 film is outdated, but it is one of the classics, watched by children year after year. This movie is based on the song Frosty the Snowman. The catchy lyrics come to life in this film as we see Frosty built and brought to life with his magical top hat.

Both the song and the film don’t end the way you would think. Unlike other Christmas movies, Frosty the Snowman ends with a sad ending. Frosty loses his magical hat, so it can no longer bring him to life.

Sometimes, the saddest movies are the best ones. Frosty takes the audience on an exciting adventure. Although Frosty’s adventures don’t end how audiences would hope, you must watch Frosty the Snowman before the holiday season is over.

5. The Polar Express

This movie brings us on a journey to the North Pole: we watch as children struggle to get there but ultimately get to see Santa. There are many fun scenes, like the hot chocolate scene, that make the movie stand out from all the others.

This movie unexpectedly ends happily. When the main character makes it to the north pole, he receives a bell from Santa’s sleigh. On his way home, he loses the bell, making the audience believe that he will have nothing to remember his travels. However, on Christmas morning, he opens a gift from Santa with the bell inside.

The Polar Express brings the north pole to you and will make you crave hot chocolate. It is a must-watch for a cold winter night.

4. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Similar to Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is a stop motion film. It was produced in 1964, making the character even older than Frosty. The stop motion animation is likely the reason many find these movies outdated. Though both are similar, this movie has something that Frosty the Snowman doesn’t: a happy ending.

Rudolph is picked on by the other reindeer for having a bright red nose. However, Rudolph’s unique characteristic is what saves Christmas. His bright nose helps him guide Santa’s sleigh through a surprise snowstorm on Christmas Eve.

Watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer will always put you in a good mood and remind you that your uniqueness isn’t a bad thing.

3. Elf

If you are looking for a good laugh, Elf is definitely the way to go. Unlike the previous movies, Elf is live action, starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf. Buddy doesn’t fit in with the elves in the north pole because he is human, but he doesn’t fit in with the humans because he was raised by an elf. Buddy the Elf causes trouble all over New York city by starting snowball fights, tackling a man dressed as Santa and more.

Elf will have you laughing from beginning to end. Not only will the characters fall in love with Buddy’s personality but you will too.

2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is based on a book by Dr. Seuss. There are cartoon and live action versions of the movie; both are excellent. However, the live action adaptation is superior to its animated counterparts because it brings the eccentric town of Whoville to life.

We get to see what the eccentric town of Whoville would really look like outside of the cartoons in the book and animation.

The live action movie stars Jim Carrey as the Grinch. Jim Carrey brings humor to a character most assume is serious and unemotional. These humorous qualities make the character both hated and relatable at the same time.

This heartwarming story ends with the Grinch turning good and befriending the people of Whoville. Watching these characters celebrate this holiday together will put you in the Christmas spirit.

1. Home Alone

Anyone in a big family knows the feeling of being forgotten; in Kevin’s case, he really was. Kevin Mcallister lives in a large family with lots of aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings.

After getting in a fight with his mom, Kevin is sent to sleep in the attic. Since Kevin isn’t with the other kids, he is forgotten. He is left home alone as his family travels to Paris, France.

Originally, Kevins sees his new found freedom as the best thing in the world, but as time goes on and he faces challenges to protect his home, Kevin realizes that all he wants for Christmas is his family back.

Home Alone will always remind you that no matter how big, loud or annoying your family is, the holidays wouldn’t be the same as enjoyable without them.

I hope these movies bring more joy to your holiday. The Sentry wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season!
