Senior Tyler Canady has set themself apart for their excellence in the art department here. From a young age, Canady began creating artwork which has brought many years of experience and led to them to try new styles and find themself within their work. Canady has become a favorite of Art Teacher Ginger Teaford, who did not hesitate to nominate them as one of the top students in the department, and as one who has greatly improved over the course of high school.

Q: What is your favorite piece?

A: “My favorite piece is my intimate self-portrait that I did at the beginning of the year. It set me on the track for my concentration this year, which was centered around myself and my identity.”

Q: Have you ever received any awards for your work?

A: “I have received a couple of scholastic awards, I think have about seven silver keys and maybe four gold keys over the years, like my entire high school career.”

Q: Where do you usually like to create your work?

A: “Either in the classroom or at home.”

Q: Is there a certain style that you typically follow?

A: “Not really, I have started to go in the direction where it is pretty rough, it is not a lot of clean edges.  I think I like that a lot, it is more expressive that way.”

Q: What are your favorite colors to work with?

A: I use a lot of purple and green in my concentration, but I am trying to incorporate a lot more softer, like pink and pastel colors.”

Q: Do you like drawing action or still life?

A: “I actually kind of like still life to be honest, I think it is kind of relaxing to draw still life.”

Q: Who is your favorite artist, and why does their work inspire you?

A: “I think Frida Kahlo because her pieces were very expressive and personal and a lot of her alignments as a person, especially politically are shown through her work.”

Q: When did you begin to make art?

A: “In elementary school, I used to draw comic books and sell them to my classmates. That was the first time I really did anything that was worth something.”
