Sports editor is a fitting title for baseball enthusiast and second year Sentry staff member, senior Michael Lowen. Having grown up playing baseball, Lowen has become a big fan of his home team, the Washington Nationals. His favorite players include Anthony Rendon, Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper. As Lowen is a senior, he will soon be applying to colleges. At the moment, his top choices include the University of Michigan, University of Virginia, North Carolina State and Wake Forest. It is no secret that whatever college he chooses to attend will be lucky to have him.
“I want to go out of state to meet new people and make friendships that will last a long time,” Lowen said.
Besides going out of state, he also mentioned that he may want to attend the University of Virginia since his brother is a student there.
When asked about what animal Lowen would like to be, Lowen said he would enjoy being a koala.
“I have never actually seen one in person, [but] they look like they have a pretty fun life just hanging out in trees and relaxing all day,” Lowen said.
This type of mentality is a common theme in Lowen’s personality as his favorite cartoon character is Patrick Star. Star hangs out and relaxes a lot, which is a main reason why Lowen idolizes him. Lowen also mentioned something else about Star.
“He’s always having fun,” Lowen said.
This is undoubtedly a subject which Lowen excels in. Another way Lowen excels is in his work for The Sentry. Lowen has been working for The Sentry for two years now and speaks highly of the program.
“It’s great to be able to work together as a class to produce such a great newspaper,” Lowen said.
Lowen is now the sports editor and has worked hard to achieve this role. Lowen mentioned something interesting when asked about his favorite candy.
“I’m not me when I don’t have a snickers bar,” Lowen said.
Although this candy seems simple and even cliché, it represents Lowen as a person. Simple and normal on the outside while being interesting and even mysterious on the inside.
As a sophomore adjusting to his new high school life, Charlie Finn has a lot to look forward to. Being a new recruit to The Sentry, Finn seems excited for the task and eager to get this year started. Finn is ready to follow the footsteps of his older brother who was a former reporter and editor for The Sentry.
“My brother was a reporter and an editor for The Sentry way back when,” Finn said.
When many students are asked what their favorite class is, a common response would be “lunch” or “patriot period,” but Finn had a different response when asked aboutt his favorite subject.
“[My favorite subject is] math because it is infinite. There is a lot of math that you can learn. Even though it can be tough, it gets you thinking. It is almost always a challenge but when you understand it it’s like ‘nice’,” Finn said.
School is not the only interest of Finn; he participates in many other activities outside of school.
“I play golf a lot and I like to run. I also enjoy playing sports and hanging with my friends, pretty much the usual. My favorite show to binge watch is probably South Park because it is wicked funny. Every episode is so creative and has you dead,” Finn said.
When Finn was asked to explain a topic that he could give a thirty minute presentation on without any preparation, his answer was quite interesting.
“When I was little I was obsessed with the story behind The Iliad, like the conquering of Troy and the Trojan horse. I read a lot of books about the history like where it was, how it happened, and the different figures,” Finn said.
There are many opportunities available after high school. Some students go to work, some students will go on to college and some may even join the military. When Finn was asked about his plans, he seemed to have a solid idea of what he wanted to do.
“Like most other students here, I want to go to college. Then maybe law school or some sort of graduate school as well,” Finn said.
Finn has aspirations of eventually working his way up to being an editor of The Sentry, and his creative thinking and writing will help him get there. When asked to pick a body part he would prefer to live without and to pick one food to eat for the rest of his life, Finn was able to come up with creative and well-thought-out responses.
“I think probably my nose. It doesn’t really do much it’s kinda just like hanging there, and I feel like it wouldn’t even look that bad if you got rid of it. All you do is smell with it, there is nothing that special about it. As far as food goes I would probably eat crab cakes because they are good. And they have a wack taste that doesn’t get that old. It is interesting every time, like every crab cake tastes different,” Finn said.
With freshman year already behind Finn, he is starting to realize that some classes can be intimidating at times.
“Obviously, freshman year is not that tough, but it is nerve-racking when you are going into junior year and you have to take all of these AP classes and tough tests and grades really matter. It is scary because you realize it all affects your future. It is so easy to get lazy and not do your work,” Finn said.
Even though he may be nervous, Finn is ready for the challenge and The Sentry is glad to have a new recruit as promising as him.
