Lindsey Bowers and Nathan Dent

Junior Lindsey Bowers, a veteran of The Sentry, has certainly been influenced by her travels. The photographer’s journeys have taken her to places as exotic as Costa Rica and the Cayman Islands, and she says that if she could do one thing for the rest of her life, she would travel. In a situation where the world was ending, and she only had one day left on earth, Bowers would spend the day hiking somewhere tropical.

The effect of her travels does not stop there; they have gone so far as to inspire her goal of being able to aid in the development of foreign education systems. Bowers’ favorite place in the world is Costa Rica, but she notes that education there is not very prominent, as well as in a lot of other places around the world. To take matters into her own hands to resolve that issue, she has considered going on a mission trip to help kids there.

“I’ve always been interested in kids. Last spring break I went to the Cayman Islands with a friend. She and I met these kids there and hung out with them. If I could change anything in the world, it would be to help those kids and other kids like them gain the same level of education that I’ve been so fortunate to have,” Bowers said.

When Bowers is not off traveling the world, you might find her at home watching her favorite show, ABC’s The Middle. While enjoying the show, she might also be enjoying a Coke, which she finds to be more refreshing than Pepsi. If she opts to be outdoors, you might find her at the beach learning to surf, a skill she has always wanted to pick up.

It is her second year as a photographer for The Sentry, which she originally became interested in because of her ninth-grade English teacher, Chrissy Wiedemann.

“I had her freshman year, who really got me interested in it; she really hyped this class up more than anyone else. I was already taking photography freshman year, and instead of taking Photography II, I now take pictures for The Sentry,” Bowers said.

Bowers hopes for a career in journalism do not stop there.  By the time she is 25, she would like to see herself out of college and hopefully working in journalism, possibly as a reporter.

If one thing is for sure, Bowers certainly enjoys what she does, and is excited to begin her work on The Sentry.

“It looks like it’s going to be a fun year, and I can’t wait to get started,” Bowers said.

Not only does Nathan Dent have great flow, but he is also a promising new member of The Yorktown Sentry. Although he is only a freshman, Dent has the many qualities that The Sentry looks for in a new reporter. At only 14 years old, Dent has dreams for the future. When asked what he will be doing in ten years, Dent was confident with his response.

“In ten years, I want to feel like I’m succeeding or at least on my way to being successful. I want to be doing something I enjoy, and I want to be surrounded with people I care about,” Dent said.

Dent’s success is determined by his happiness. His goal in life is to be content and successful. Support from others is important to Dent, which goes hand-in-hand with the movie character he feels he relates to most.

“[I relate most to] Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. There are times when I feel absolutely defeated, but at the same time I have all of these great friends who are able to bring me up, or at least temporarily. It’s a nice supportive feeling to have,” Dent said.

Dent is an aspiring actor. Originally from Los Angeles, he wants to possibly move back there to pursue a career in acting. When asked who his role model is, Dent was quick to answer that it is rapper and clothing designer Kanye West. Some may not agree because of West’s cocky nature, but Dent admires West for his perseverance through his challenging life.

“He came from almost nothing in Chicago, but he was so determined and really made a success of himself, and I admire that,” Dent said.

Through all of Dent’s experiences in life, a few stand out to him. He went sailing around the British Virgin Islands last spring break and really enjoyed it. Another memory significant to Dent is from his time living in Singapore when he was little.

“We lived in this old apartment building, and I somehow locked myself in my room and nobody realized for about two hours. My mom finally realized and the whole apartment building was in my room in a matter of 15 minutes. The fire department busted down the door, I thought it was a surprise party for me because there were so many people there. It was kinda cool and nice to know that so many people cared about me,” Dent said.

All of Dent’s intuitions and experiences have shaped him into the cool young man he is today. Dent will surely be an important asset to The Sentry staff this year.
