Our school has some of the best teachers in the world—they are the backbone of our school and the glue that keeps the classrooms together. We are all truly thankful for what they bring to our school’s community. However, they are human. They make mistakes and jokes, and they leave us with memories we’ll one day tell our children. Here are our favorite memories and moments from the classroom.
“We had a back to school assembly this year, and I was sitting in the front row, and Ms. Sutphin was there, and she was pregnant. I looked at her and I said, ‘You’re pregnant?’ and then she stuttered and had to stop her presentation. I mouthed it to her because we were making eye contact, and she shook her head but said yes. Afterward she was like ‘you got me all startled’,” senior Margaux Harms said.
History teacher Kevin Bridwell is famous for his antics while teaching.
“One time in class, Mr. Bridwell was talking to a student about what’s in his fridge, and the student asked for some mustard, and he came over and squirted the mustard packets into his [the students] hands,” senior Shea Augustin said.
Senior Zoe Eisenberg also has a few stories from her time in Bridwell’s class.
“If you fall asleep during class, he drops his keys right next to your head to wake people up,” Eisenberg said.
“One day, I had a concussion from hockey, so he brought in a hockey helmet and he made me wear it during class because of my concussion. He was like, “now you can be more safe,’” Eisenberg said.
“He always has coffee and food for students. One time, I was falling asleep in class, and he was like, ‘I’ll give you a granola bar if you sign up for my SOL review after school because I need some more students’, so I got a free granola bar,” Eisenberg said.
History teacher Beau Obetts has left quite the impression on his classes. Freshman Jac DeCasper fondly reflects on her experience as one of Obetts’ students.
“I’d have to say my favorite teacher is Mr. Obetts. There was one time he came to school in a suit and read something out loud, and he had us hype him up. He was standing on the table, and after everything, he would say we would clap and be like ‘yeah!’ and he would keep going on the table just in a suit. He always participates in the spirit days and would wear crazy stuff to school, so we weren’t surprised,” DeCasper said.
These humorous teacher tales can be found in all of our classrooms and delight students amid a boring school day.
