If all of the chocolate is gone, then it was probably The Sentry’s new reporter, junior Garrett Ferguson, who ate it.
“My worst [guilty pleasure] is probably chocolate. I eat too much chocolate most of the time, and then I am like, ‘Wait, why did I do that? That was a bad idea,’” Ferguson said.
The Sentry staff is lucky to have a new addition who is so personable and approachable. Not only is Ferguson easy to talk to, but he is also interested in getting to know the people around him. He will surely bring high spirits to the group and a special voice to the paper.
Apart from journalism, Ferguson keeps busy in his other classes, especially science. Both challenging and fascinating, chemistry is one of the most interesting classes he has taken thus far.
“I really liked my chemistry class, and I thought it was a lot of fun. I had a good teacher, and I do not really like physics this year that much, yet,” Ferguson said.
Although he is unsure of what his future will hold, Ferguson hopes to pursue a career in science. Ferguson’s passion for learning chemistry will help him to achieve this goal.
Outside of academics, Ferguson runs for the school’s cross country team. His favorite part of the day is going home after a strenuous practice and taking a shower. There is nothing better than the refreshing feeling of a cold shower after a long workout. And after all of that running, Ferguson probably wishes that he was his dog.
“[If I could be any animal] I would be a dog. All my dog does is sleep all day, so I think that would be kind of nice,” Ferguson said.
When Ferguson is not doing cross country, he enjoys being a part of a youth group at church, in which he has grown close to his youth director. Ferguson looks up to him, not only because he is a leader, but also because he and Ferguson have become such close friends.
When it comes to books and movies, Ferguson’s top picks are some classics. He chose none other than the beloved American novel To Kill a Mockingbird as his favorite book, with his most-liked character being the young Jem Finch. Just as Ferguson has read To Kill a Mockingbird more than once, he could watch his favorite movie, 21 Jump Street, over and over again.
“I think that 21 Jump Street is really funny. The second one was not as good, but the first one was really good. I just think that Jonah Hill is so funny because he is so pathetic,” Ferguson said.
As a reader, a book would be among the three things that Ferguson would bring with him to a deserted island.
“I would probably bring sushi because it is my favorite food. It would probably go bad in about a day, but I would at least have it for a day. I guess [I would bring] a book. I do not really know what book, but something to keep me entertained. [I would also bring] a soccer ball or something sports related to keep me busy,” Ferguson said.
Although most people would worry about being stuck on an empty island in the middle of the ocean, Ferguson would probably make do pretty well, considering that he has scuba diving skills.
“Two summers ago I went to this camp in the Caribbean. We went sailing and scuba diving, so I would probably want to relive the day when we did five dives in one day. I really liked it, but I was always so scared because what happens if your oxygen tank cuts off? It is really cool, but I guess it is not something for everyone,” Ferguson said.
Not only has Ferguson seen the vibrant colors of the depths of the Caribbean Sea, but he has also visited to beautiful state of tropical Hawaii.
“[If I could live anywhere] I think I would really want to live in Hawaii because it is beautiful there. I really like Hawaii. I have only been there once, but I thought it was awesome,” Ferguson said.
With all of his remarkable qualities, there is no doubt that Ferguson will make a great addition to The Sentry. He will most certainly work hard to write amazing articles, and we cannot wait to read them.
An avid fan of Twitter, french fries and her chihuahuas, senior Rosie Eldridge is really excited about her third and final year on The Sentry staff. Eldridge describes herself as a hardworking and enthusiastic person, which is likely the reason why she has been given such a large responsibility to lead the staff this year as news editor.
“In school, I’m a super conscientious worker, and I care a lot about the type of work I put forth. Outside of school, I feel like I’m super enthusiastic around my friends. I get really excited about really small things,” Eldridge said.
When she is not with friends or doing schoolwork, Eldridge loves to watch TV shows like The Office and Gossip Girl. In fact, her celebrity crush is Chace Crawford, who plays Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl.
Although she used to want to become a doctor, Eldridge now wants to follow in her sister’s footsteps and become a nurse practitioner. She also wants to become fluent in Spanish, and incorporate both in her future job. Including journalism in her future career would be ideal as well, as she has learned so much about it and become passionate about writing during her time on The Sentry.
“I think it would be so cool to be involved in something like Doctors Without Borders, or something like that. But also have journalism thrown in there, like having a blog,” Eldridge said.
Eldridge is a member of the school’s cross country team, but if she could choose any sport to be skilled at, she would choose soccer.
“I run cross country, and I’m really bad at it, and I don’t really care that I’m bad at it. I used to play a bunch of [recreational] sports, and I wish I was really good at soccer,” Eldridge said.
It is her lifelong goal to travel the world, and she wants to visit all of the continents except for Antarctica. It may be hard to accomplish, but she is certainly willing and excited to fulfill her dream. If she could have any superpower, it would be teleportation to attain her traveling dreams, among other things.
“I would teleport… so I’d never be late [again]. Also, I used to live in Ohio, and my best friend still lives there, and that would make it so easy to just teleport back. And you could also go anywhere in the world at any time. There are just so many pluses,” Eldridge said.
Her favorite holiday is Christmas, and she loves the holiday spirit, although she could do without the cold. Her least favorite holiday is Halloween, and she does not like fall in general. Eldridge much prefers spring and summer because of the warm temperatures and beautiful weather.
Lastly, if Eldridge could be any animal in the world, she would choose to be a dolphin. She loves the ocean and she thinks it would be fun to swim in crystal blue water all the time.
Her numerous aspirations display her unparalleled work ethic, and as Eldridge continues to bring her professional, fun and determined personality to The Sentry staff, she hopes that this year will bring a successful end to her high school career.
