Joey Pickel and Bergen Romness

Sophomore and second year reporter Joey Pickel is looking forward to this school year, as well as the rest of the Green Bay Packers’ season. A native of Kieler, Wisconsin, Pickel is an active fan, educated on every aspect of Packer’s football.

“My dad grew up in Wisconsin, that’s where all my family is from, and if you live there, or know anyone from there, they all love the Packers, and if they don’t they’re in trouble. I just grew up loving them,” Pickel said.

In Kieler, you can be sure to find Pickel in his favorite spot. Kieler is not only his favorite place to be, but it is where most of his childhood occurred.

“I like my grandparents’ house. There’s a lot of stuff you can do there, they’ve got a lot of open land, you can do just about anything you want. I learned how to drive down there, I learned how to shoot, I learned how to fish, all that,” Pickel said.

Although he enjoys the simplicity of his grandparents’ house, Pickel is a traveler. When asked what his dream vacation would be, he did not hesitate to respond.

“Somewhere overseas. Maybe somewhere like Ireland, I’ve always wanted to go there over the summer. Maybe New Zealand,” Pickel said.

Ireland and New Zealand may be the perfect places for Pickel. With thier cool, beautiful temperatures, Pickel would be living his best life.

“I like it more when it’s cold. I feel like I can deal with the cold, the heat sometimes I just get sick of it. Maybe about low 60’s, somewhere around there,” Pickel said.

As Pickel enjoys sports and being with family, there is another side to him that may be unfamiliar to some. Pickel is a strong student with a passion for writing, so for him, joining The Sentry was a hobby, rather than a class.

“I just like to write. I took journalism in middle school, I thought that was pretty fun. And I wanted another class where I just had to write in it,” Pickel said.

Pickel’s writing will not come to an end after this class. He hopes to continue into a career that focuses solely on writing.

“I just want to write. If that is journalism, then yeah. Creative writing, I like doing that too. Either one of those two,” Pickel said.

While Pickel is usually the author, he has also been featured as the star of a story. After years of knowing a local author, Pickel did not think much about having his name included in one of his comics.

“I got to meet a lot of cool writers over the years. I got put in a Batman comic, my name was in [it],” Pickel said.

Pickel is an outgoing guy with many interesting experiences that have shaped who he is today. The Sentry staff is excited to have him back for another year! With his hard work and drive to write, his articles are expected to contribute to a great paper.

Senior Bergen Romness is beginning her final year here at The Sentry. As a senior, Romness will be taking the pictures that give life to the staff’s articles. She is a three-year Sentry veteran, so at this point nothing can surprise her. Although she loves journalism and The Sentry, Romness can not hide her passion for another class.

“Besides this class [Newspaper] I really enjoy math… I like all math,” Romness said.

School is an important part of Romness’ life, as it is with most people her age. However, one thing she has nailed down that most people do not is the art of organization.

“Each class is color coordinated, so I just have a folder for each class and classes I need notebooks they’re just separate,” Romness said.

Outside of the classroom, Romness is an active athlete.  She currently plays field hockey and when describing the rules of the game, she quickly breaks the stereotype that it is basically ice hockey without skates.

“It’s like ice hockey in the only way where you have a stick and a ball on the ground but there are eleven players on the field.  And basically, there’s a circle around the goal and if there’s any penalties drawn in the circle you get a corner which is like a shot on goal where’s there’s only four defenders,” Romness said.

In Romness’ free time you can find her doing one of several of her favorite things. Those favorite include watching the Packers or Capitals, or maybe popping in her favorite movie 27 Dresses.  But one thing is for sure, you will never find her reading.

“I don’t have a favorite book; unfortunately I don’t like to read,” Romness said.

When looking back at her life so far, she definitely knows who she would prefer to star as herself in a biopic about her life. She has expressed interest in having Cameron Diaz or Blake Lively to play herself. However, the logistics of it leaves her unsure if the film would ever be made.

“My favorite actress is Blake Lively and I also like Cameron Diaz, I don’t really look like either one of them, but I would definitely want one of them to play me.  But you can’t really make them look like high schoolers, so it would be hard,” Romness said.

Looking forward into the future Romness has an interesting career choice in mind.

“I think it would be really cool to be a sports attorney,” Romness said.

While a sports attorney may be the ideal job, she also has optimal lifestyle planned out as well and is not afraid to go into detail when asked about it.

“I just go to the beach probably. In the morning… I feel like if I lived on the beach I live a very healthy lifestyle. So I’d do some kind of exercise in the morning and have a really nutritious breakfast. And then I would, have lunch and go down to the beach for a couple of hours. And then have a family dinner,” Romness said.

With the future all planned out and with a stronghold on the now, it is anyone’s guess for what comes next for Romness. Her pictures found in The Sentry articles prove her talent for photography, and when she leaves at the end of this year she will be missed.
