Emily Burke and Jessie Moyer

Emily Burke and Jessie Moyer

The fact that sophomore and first year Sentry staff member Jessie Moyer chose a dog as her spirit animal because she likes to both sleep and have fun shows that Moyer knows how to balance work and relaxation perfectly. Moyer runs cross country in the fall and plays tennis in the spring, but still has time for activities typical for high school students, such as watching Netflix.

Although Moyer was stumped when asked which member of the Kardashian family she would be, she had a perfect response to the question of which character on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody best matches her personality. Even her preference in Disney Channel characters reflects her commitment to staying busy.

“[I’m] probably Maddie, because she works hard and she’s serious,” said Moyer.

When asked to play the role of the Sorting Hat and decide which Hogwarts house she belongs in, Moyer’s response emphasized her creativity and genuine passion for learning, qualities that will make her an ideal Sentry staff member.

“I [would be] in Ravenclaw because I like learning,” said Moyer.

However, Moyer’s love of learning and value of hard work certainly don’t mean she doesn’t know how to have fun. When presented with the difficult challenge of choosing her favorite Netflix series to binge-watch, Moyer answered without hesitation.

“My favorite series is The Office. It’s really funny, and I usually don’t laugh out loud but I do laugh out loud at The Office,” said Moyer.

Returning to the subject of Disney Channel, when asked what show best represents her life, Moyer’s answer was unique.

“Not having anything to do with the show, people sing [the Jessie theme song] to me a lot, so it’s kind of the theme song to my life,” said Moyer.

Moyer is looking forward to spending the next three years as a Sentry staff member, and her work ethic and enthusiasm for learning will allow her to make a valuable contribution to the paper.

“I’m really excited to be in the same class for three years. It’ll be cool to have a class I’m always with. [I want] to get better at writing because I like to write but sometimes it’s hard to do,” said Moyer.

As Michael Scott from The Office would say, “The people that you work with are, when you get down to it, your very best friends.” The Sentry staff is lucky enough to get to work and become friends with someone as funny, positive and diligent as Moyer.

If senior and news section editor Emily Burke were to die today, a Baked and Wired cupcake would be the last thing she ate. A very smart and friendly girl, it is no surprise she is very involved at Yorktown. An ex-travel-soccer player, she now spends her time as a member of the Debate Team, Model General Assembly, and NHS. Burke also tutors students at the Writing Center and is a Spanish honors tutor. She has lived in Arlington for almost all of her life, but when asked where her dream place to live would be, Spain was her country of choice.

“I really like the city of Madrid,” she said, “I think it’s really fun.”

When asked what the best day of her life was she responded,

“Any day I’m with my friends doing something really fun like going to a museum or walking around or the beach.”

An avid reader, her favorite book is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. She also loves the Harry Potter series and binge-watching Netflix.

“My favorite binge watch is Gossip Girl. I just watch that over and over,” she said.

She hopes that in ten years  she has finished college and law school and is practicing law. She loves writing so it is no surprise her best memories of high school have been in journalism having fun.

“This is my favorite class ever,” said Burke, “I love Ms. Wiedemann and everyone in it. We have parties where everyone brings in food and it’s a great time,” she said.

Needless to say, The Sentry will miss Burke and her many contributions when she completes this year with flying colors.
