Let’s face the facts. The school day already feels way too long, and certain desks have the potential to make or break that day. Our school’s desks have many different features, from armrests to metal poles and wood to plastic. So without further ado, here is a definitive ranking of all of our school’s best and worst desks.
Starting off strong we have a plastic desk with a slight indent at the top for your pencil. This desk also has legs at the front and back, which allows you to sit in more versatile positions. The smooth plastic allows for an easier glide of your hand while writing or typing. However, you may be quite uncomfortable when leaning on the desk due to the metal pole on the right side connecting the seat and the desk.
Unfortunately, this next desk is a definite downgrade. With a rough wood surface and no front legs, this desk is basically a safety hazard. If anyone tried to sit on top of it, they would immediately fall over. However, this one has the beneficial feature of a basket underneath, which could be used for storage or as a footrest.
An unusual pick by a few teachers is the rectangular or square shared tables. If you are doing group work, everyone is already facing each other which makes communication easier. However with everyone turned in the same direction, leg space becomes severely limited with people awkwardly bumping into each other and murmuring quick apologies while attempting to get comfortable in the abnormal situation. It also makes looking at the board difficult, because some have to turn slightly sideways while others are fully turned away from the teacher.
If you have the misfortune of sitting at this desk, you may be confused as to whether you are sitting at a desk or a rubber duck with how often it squeaks. Good luck trying to write an essay, let alone a sentence with the upward and rotational mobility of the surface of this desk. It’s easy to say that this would in fact send someone spiraling, just like the desk.
The desk that takes the metaphorical cake here is fully supported, basket-included, wide armrest on the side, and able to turn any bad day into one full of sunshine and rainbows. If you are lucky enough to get this desk, make sure to enjoy the opportunity and utilize all of its incredible attributes.
Hopefully next year, when you walk into your new classes and it comes time to pick a desk, be sure to analyze what seat you are willing to endure for the rest of the year. Select one that will get you through both good days and bad, as well as one that will support you for the nine months of the school year.
