Our September Athlete of the month is Katie Calvo. She is currently playing for the Varsity field hockey team. Katie made Varsity as a freshman, so the coaches clearly saw her potential early, and their decision has paid off. Field hockey is fast paced and can change in an instant, making it an entertaining game. Calvo has been a star player this year and will be counted on even more next season with the loss of the class of 2017.

Q: How did you begin your field hockey career?

A: I started playing field hockey in 5th grade with the first youth field hockey team in Arlington. I was lucky to have started so early because there were not many opportunities for people who weren’t in high school to play.

Q: Are you a multi sport athlete or is your sole sport Field Hockey?

A: I also play lacrosse for Yorktown and for travel and I run indoor track for Yorktown in the winter.

Q: What position and what role does that position play?

A: I play left forward and role is to take the ball down the left side, which is the hardest side in field hockey because it is on the reverse, and cross the ball for a goal. I also am the inserter on corners, so I hit the ball to the person that the shot and plays on the left post.

Q: If you could, would you play field hockey in college?

A: I am looking to play lacrosse in college,  but if i had the opportunity to play both sports in college, I would.

Q: How has Yorktown done this year?

A: We’ve had a pretty good season this year. We started out a little rough, but we’ve picked it up and and have scored 16 goals in the last four games. We are playing our best when it matters most and are almost ready to go into the conference playoffs.”

Q: Are you getting any offers to play field hockey in college?

A: I have some, but I am looking to play lacrosse in college instead.

Q: What’s the best goal you have ever scored?

A: The best goal I have ever scored was last year when we played amazing against Herndon, who is always a really good team. Everyone was so excited and it was a great game for our team.

Q: On a scale from 1-10, how exciting can field hockey games get?

A: Field hockey games are a ten because the game can change at any moment and it is always really fun when the hype squad and a lot of people come out to watch!

Q: Would you say field hockey is fast paced?

A: Field hockey can be really fast paced because anything could happen at any time and goals can be scored really quickly.

Q: As a junior what are your hopes for next years season?

A: My goal for next year is to hopefully make captain and have a good rebuilding year after losing eleven.

Calvo is clearly an important player for our team on and off the field. She has the necessary skills to go far in lacrosse or field hockey. Calvo is a humble and talented athlete who is bound to take her talents to the next level.
