The Yorktown Sentry is starting a new column that will highlight one artist from the school. Each art instructor will submit the name of one student to be featured on the Sentry website.

Yorktown has produced great artists over the years. If anyone has spent time within the building, they would notice the outstanding pieces that cover the walls and the posters posted outside the atrium. One of the many artists featured within the school is senior Julia Sachs, an experienced artist eyeing the professional field. Sachs has participated in art courses for her entire tenure at Yorktown and has earned praise from multiple art instructors.

Teacher Virginia Teaford has witnessed Sachs expand and develop her art for the past four years. When Teaford was first contacted about the article, there was no doubt that Sachs fit the description of a talented, aspiring artist. In her last year at Yorktown, she participates in Advanced Placement Studio Art and a Fine Arts Apprenticeship Program.

Sachs has been an artist for a majority of her schooling years and has benefited from the teachings of a family member.

“I began from a young age with the help of my aunt who is an artist. Mrs. Teaford has also been very supportive of me through the years,” Sachs said.

Not only is Sachs a talented artist, but has a passion for connecting art to history and her overall view of the world.

“I also am very interested in history. I think art allows me to view the world in a more colorful way,” Sachs said.

Sachs has spent time her senior year researching colleges that have an attractive art program.

“I have been really attracted by NYU. They have one of the best art programs in the entire country,” Sachs said.

During her years at Yorktown, Sachs worked with many types of art. She hopes art plays a role as she shifts into the professional world, but would like to experiment with even more forms of art.

“I have been interested by interior and fashion design. I like that I can still continue to be an artist but also be exposed to a new and interesting field,” Sachs said.

Julia Sachs has never let her age restrict her ability to develop her art. Since a young age she has been inspired by many. She has earned recognition from many students and teachers alike for her work ethic and fantastic personality. With those skills it is no doubt that she will make for an outstanding figure no matter where she is.
