If you’re looking for some place new to explore this summer, look no further. Located just off of Lee Highway in Fairfax, the newly renovated Mosaic District has a little bit of everything, from delicious food to fun activities. Switch up your typical Clarendon/Georgetown routine and check out the (other) District.
For a Quick Bite: Cava Mezze
If you haven’t tried Cava yet, you haven’t lived. Often referred to as the “Mediterranean Chipotle,” this “fast-casual” chain has become a favorite among those in the DC-area, especially those looking for a quick, healthy, no-fuss meal. Facing out to Mosaic’s Strawberry Park, Cava serves up fresh, mediterranean inspired dishes in a buffet style. The build-a-bowl starts with a base (various rices or lentils), then one can choose a protein (seasoned meats, falafel, etc.) and finally add three toppings, along with three different kinds of hummus. Pro tip: the red-pepper hummus is the best I’ve ever had, if you’re into that.
For a Night Out: True Food Kitchen & Ted’s Bulletin
A fancier occasion calls for some fancier food, and the ambiance to match. For the vegetarians/vegans among us, True Food Kitchen offers an “internationally focused menu that tastes amazing while nourishing mind, body and spirit.” Basically, it’s your go-to for an allergen-free quality meal. With colorful iron chairs and wood walls, the interior screams “natural,” while the Instagram-worthy dishes make the restaurant a hit.
If you like classic American fare (ie: supersized milkshakes), Ted’s Bulletin is the place to go. The restaurant specializes in burgers and fries, but with a gourmet twist. This isn’t your average diner food! Some menu highlights include a peanut butter bacon burger and a crabcake platter. With its homey feel (dinner is called “supper”) and comfort food, Ted’s is the rare kind of place where people eat mac and cheese in their sunday best.
Best Coffee: Mom & Pop
I could not make a guide to Mosaic without including the work of art that is Mom & Pop, a new café from Dolcezza Gelato. The all-glass cube is situated right in the middle of all the action, with a full view out into the grassy Strawberry Park. Grab a Stumptown coffee or pastry, or just bask in the air-conditioning (while pretending you’re outside) when the weather gets hot this summer.
For Something to Do: Angelika Film Center
Because summertime is basically code for movie time, take a break from your Netflix list and watch a film in Mosaic’s resident theater. Self-described as an “elegant and stylish eight-screen cinema [that] exhibits the highest quality art, independent and specialty films in a cutting-edge theatrical environment,” the place is a hit among locals. It originated in the trendy Soho district of New York City in 1989, and has since opened multiple boutique theaters across the country. Sit back and watch a movie in one of the Center’s plush seats, or simply admire the art!
For Fun: Films in the Park Festival
On the subject of movies, nothing screams “summer” like a movie under the stars. Lucky for everyone, the District is hosting a “Films in the Park” festival this summer, where a movie will be shown in Strawberry Park every Friday, starting at 7 PM. Grab a few friends and a blanket, or make it a family night, but either way it’s a guaranteed good time. On June 24 there will be no movie (Spark Yoga is hosting a Summer Solstice party instead), but on July 1 and 8 Field of Dreams and E.T, The Extra Terrestrial will be shown respectively.
