For her One Person Show, Katie Scruggs chose to play the character Narcissa Malfoy, Draco’s mom from the Harry Potter series. Narcissa is a pure-blood witch in the series, so it was certainly difficult for Scruggs to adapt her character; however, Narcissa’s determination to stand up for those she loves is something that Scruggs could relate to, making the process easier. After watching the Harry Potter series over and over again, Scruggs began to see Narcissa in a new light and fell in love with her strength.
“Narcissa was so strong throughout her entire life and protected her family, especially her son, through and through and a lot of people don’t realize it so I wanted to show her story,” Scruggs said.
Although Scruggs portrayed a character from Harry Potter, there was limited magic in her show because of how hard it would have been explain it. She found it very difficult to explain the character to people who have never read or seen the series, so she had to pick her scenes very wisely. In the end, her show is turned out just the way she wanted it to.
Scruggs had been set on performing the life of Narcissa since her sophomore year and has loved Harry Potter ever since she was a little kid.
“I love my piece. I’m so happy with what I’ve done. It’s taken four years to get me to where I am and I’m excited to be showing my own show to people,” Scruggs said.
After her four years in theater, Scruggs is not ready to give up her passion for performing arts. Although she does not plan on majoring in the theater at Virginia Commonwealth University, Scruggs is certain that she will be able to continue performing in college.
