Halftime Performance, Full on Entertainment

A Super Bowl calls for a super performance,  and nothing less is to be expected from pop singer Katy Perry who is performing in the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime show. Perry has some big shoes to fill, for last year Bruno Mars attracted a record breaking 115.3 millions viewers, beating the 114 million record set by Madonna two years before. Though these shows may have brought in the most viewers, many fans are not pleased with the new pop style of the performances.

Performers of the halftime shows used to be seen as music icons, people who had made their mark in the music industry, such as Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2. Now, it seems as if the halftime performer is whatever popstar is big at the moment. Sophomore Parker Christian is not pleased with this new change in style

“I feel the halftime shows have gotten worse over the years because rock legends used to perform and now pop stars have taken over,” said Christian.

These changes in style are likely due to the interest in music today, and who viewers will be most interested in watching perform.

“The shows have definitely changed from the past due to pop culture and the innovations of technology. I think shows should go back to the way they used to be because that is my taste of music, however many teenagers are much more interested in pop, so I don’t think it will change,” said Christian.

Some may think the shows are getting worse, but on the opposing side sophomore Maddi Reicherter believes the performances are improving.

“I feel like the shows have gotten better, for reasons like all the extravagant technology and fun new artists who come out to play,” said Reicherter.

Reicherter, like many teens, enjoys the fun upbeat style of Katy Perry, and she is excited for her performance.

“After going to Perry’s concert a few years ago I believe she can live up to expectations for the super bowl performance. I love her music, it is easy to sing along to because everyone knows the words,” said Reicherter.

Katy Perry has been known for her extravagant performances including bizarre outfits and effects, which she plans on bringing to the Super Bowl. During the playoff game in New England, Perry announced Lenny Kravitz would be joining her in her performance. This may please some of the rock and roll fans who have been unimpressed with the latest halftime shows. Kravitz is a four time grammy award winner and is best known for his guitar skills. Adding him to the show will incorporate today’s pop style with the classic rock style the shows used to have.

It is no secret halftime shows have changed from rock performances to pop in the past few years. Although many may not like the new pop style of the Super Bowl halftime shows, Katy Perry’s performance is definitely one to watch.
