Student on a Budget

The holidays are a time of giving, but this can be hard if you are a broke high schooler. It is difficult to enjoy the holidays if you are constantly worried about money or overspending. Here are some suggestions on how to join in on the spirit of giving without putting a dent in your wallet.

  1. Scarves: With the snow storms coming, one of the best ways to stay warm is to wear a scarf. Buy a friend a new scarf for the holidays, for it is also a fun accessory and will add style to their wardrobe. Nordstroms and Forever 21 offer cute scarves for around $12.
  2. Candy: For a sweet gift, figure out a friend’s favorite candy and buy them a king-size bar or large bag.
  3. Ugly Christmas Sweater: One of the biggest holiday trends are ugly Christmas-themed sweaters. Many thrift stores will have them for a cheap price, making it the perfect gift for a friend to wear around the holidays or to a tacky Christmas party.
  4. Picture Frame: Include a photo of yourself and friend in either a homemade or store bought picture frame for an adorable and personalized gift that any friend will appreciate. Target sells picture frames for around $10.
  5. Bath and Body Works: Cold weather can lead to dry skin, but this problem can easily be solved with a bottle of lotion from Bath and Body Works. The store always has a savings deal going on, so many items can be purchased for a low price. An eight fluid ounce bottle of lotion is $12 at retail price, but on sale it is $5.
  6. Movie Tickets: Buy two movie tickets for a friend so they can treat themselves and a partner of their choice to any new blockbuster they have been dying to see. Movie tickets are typically around $13 and can be purchased at any theater or on Fandango.com.
  7. Baked Goods: Don’t have the time to go out and buy a gift? No worries. Baked goods, such as cookies or brownies, are always a yummy gift option. For a fun holiday twist, add peppermint bark to brownies.
  8. Mug: A mug, tumbler or thermos filled with hot chocolate mix, tea or coffee is a perfect gift for a friend who loves warm drinks. Many girls are fans of Lilly Pulitzer, which sells tumblers and travel mugs for $15.
  9. Fuzzy Socks: Regular white ankle socks can get boring, so buy a friend a pair of colorful fuzzy socks to keep their feet toasty and comfortable during those cold winter nights. Fuzzy socks can be found at TJ Maxx and Target for $5.
