Shore Thing: The Best Beach Games To Play This Summer

With school almost over and the warm weather already here, it’s time to get rid of the textbooks and pick up the beach towels and sandals. Whether you’re playing a friendly game of beach bocci, or a competitive Spikeball game with friends, outdoor beach games are the perfect way to embrace the sun, beach and summer vibes.

Kanjam is a 2v2 frisbee game where both teams compete to land their disc into a 3 feet high bucket. One player throws the frisbee from 50 feet away, trying their best to get it near the bucket. The other player stands near the bucket and then tries to hit the frisbee into the bucket to earn a point. The game requires teamwork, accuracy, and a bit of strategy, making every match an exciting experience. Kanjam can be played pretty much anywhere with open space, but when played on the beach, it takes on a new level of fun. Diving into the sand for a save, celebrating a clutch score, and enjoying the warm sun and ocean breeze are all part of what makes the beach Kanjam experience even more fun.

Spikeball is another 2v2 game that is played with a ball and a small net that is around one foot off the ground. Teams take turns slamming a bouncy ball off of the net, aiming to hit the ball where the opposing team can’t return it. The game requires a ton of hand-eye coordination, agility, and quick reflexes, as well as some strategy and teamwork, making it a demanding but fun game. Similarly to Kanjam, Spikeball can be played pretty much anywhere with open space but it is primarily played on a grass or turf field.

Probably the most infamous of all beach games is beach volleyball. An eight foot net is placed in the sand with a large outline on both sides of the net to indicate the field of play. It is played generally with two teams of six but can be played two on two as well. Beach volleyball can get very competitive on some beaches, as many people play in leagues with others, but if you’re looking for a more laid back game, it would probably be best to bring your own net. The game requires a lot of communication, teamwork, coordination and some skill in hitting the ball. Some of the best parts of beach volleyball are epic slams and blocks, acrobatic saves in the sand and the long lasting volleys,

For some less demanding and more relaxed games there are plenty of other fun options. Bocce ball is one of the most popular and easy games to play. Bocce ball courts are typically 91 feet long and 13 feet wide with the court surface being gravel, turf, or clay. Bocce involves one player throwing a small white ball, called the pallino, and then both players try to throw their ball as close to the pallino as possible. Typically it is a 1v1 or 2v2 on the court, but if you bring some bocci balls to the beach you generally play every man for themselves and can play with even more people.

One of the best parts about playing on the beach is that there is no set field of play. Bocce is a great option for an easy going and fun game to play with friends and family while you’re at the beach and looking for a fun way to soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful summer weather.

Another easygoing game to play at the beach is paddle ball. Paddle ball, a two player game where players hit a golf-sized rubber ball to get the longest possible rally, takes some hand eye coordination and teamwork, but really anyone can play. There may be the occasional diving save, but the game is a fun way to pass time at the beach with friends and enjoy the soft sand and ocean breeze.

One of the easiest games to play outside or at the beach is frisbee. Just tossing a frisbee back and forth with friends while talking is one of the more relaxing things to do at the beach, while still being a little active. Even though the ocean wind may take the frisbee a little off course, frisbee is still an awesome activity to relax, clear your mind and enjoy the full summer vibe.

Whether you’re making a diving volleyball save or just taking in the sun during a game of frisbee, summer beach games bring people together in a way that is both exhilarating and unforgettable. The sun, the waves and the competition create a perfect environment for fun and friendly challenges. So grab your gear, get your friends, and make your beach trip one to remember.
