Arlington is home to some fantastic fields, but what good would the favorable fields be without some unfavorable fields to compare it to? Whether you’re an athlete, a nature lover or someone just looking for an outdoor adventure, everyone deserves a great field that they can enjoy. So, here is a ranking of the best and worst fields in our area.

#5 – Carver Community Center:
Possibly the worst field in Arlington is the field shared by the Hoffman Boston Elementary School and Carver Community Center. With abnormally large drainage divots surrounding the soccer field and uneven grass scattered among this mostly dirt field, it’s an injury just waiting to happen. To add onto this nightmare of a field, parent spectators have no place to sit and watch their kids play. This is due to all of the benches being surrounded by caution tape. The low quality of the material used to build them leads to their collapse from even the slightest pressure.

#4 – Dorothy Hamm:
Dorothy Hamm Middle School’s grass field is a slight step up from the last, yet it still leaves much to be desired. Although the quality of the grass is decent, as soon as a drop of water hits this field, it turns into a pigsty. Rain over the weekend means that the field will be out of commission for the entire week until the grass is completely dry. Nevertheless, if you are one of the lucky few who get to use it before it does, be quick on your toes as the field can be reminiscent of quicksand.

#3 – Bluemont Park:
Bluemont Park is a gem for locals, especially for parents who appreciate the nice balance of a playground, trails and a lovely grassy field. The field isn’t ideal for sports, as it is taller grass and not as maintained as other fields, but it’s perfect for a casual game of catch or a picnic on a sunny day. It may not be the most well kept, but the community charm makes up for it.

#2 – Yorktown’s Greenbrier Field:
For those in search of a field with a little more structure and a lot more action, our school’s Greenbrier Field is a great spot. Whether it’s football, soccer or track, this field has the perfect amenities for any occasion. It’s well-maintained and consistently in use, which speaks to how popular and reliable it is.

#1 – Long Bridge Park:
Easily the most popular field in our area would have to be the mass of turf fields at Long Bridge Park. The quality of the turf is soft enough to cushion a fall, but tough enough to allow quick agility movements by athletes. The large metal bleachers next to the fields allow for spectators to view the variety of events, and the large parking lot ensures popularity among visitors. Not only does the park have fields, but also includes a playground for younger children and multiple restrooms across the park. One of the most versatile fields in our area, Long Bridge Park has hosted everything from ultimate frisbee tournaments to weekly soccer games. The location is in the heart of Crystal City, allowing for a variety of food options for those using the park.

From dirt patches to pristine turf, Arlington offers a variety of places to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re playing sports, enjoying a peaceful stroll or just seeking a quiet spot to relax, there’s a field for every activity. So next time you’re out and about, be sure to pack a picnic or your favorite book, because there’s a field waiting just for you!
