Our school’s ice hockey team is known for exciting games at the Medstar Iceplex rink in Ballston. Watching the talented members of our ice hockey team shine on the ice, you might be inspired to go ice skating at a local spot in our area too. With the temperatures dropping, now is a great time to go skating in the D.C. area. While Medstar is a great local spot, there are many other great options to ice skate in our area too. We have compiled a list of the best and affordable ice rinks in our area.
Sculpture Garden: One of the most iconic ice skating rinks in D.C. is in the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery. This popular option is open from November through March, and is open every day of the week. The rink itself is surrounded by trees, and there is a pretty view of the surrounding buildings and sculptures nearby. The Pavilion Café near the rink also offers delicious food like sandwiches and desserts to go along with a fun experience.
Wharf: The Wharf offers the only ice skating rink on water, the Potomac River, in DC. This is a great outdoor spot with beautiful views of the Potomac River. While it is more expensive than the Sculpture Garden, the fun of skating on a rink that is on the Potomac is truly an experience that is worth it. Holiday lights stretch across over the rink, and there is a lovely view with boats in the marina and a vibrant nightlife along The Wharf.
Washington Harbour: Another outdoor option is ice skating at the Washington Harbor in Georgetown. Ice skating in Washington Harbour boasts views of the Potomac River, Kennedy Center and Key Bridge. The rink is surrounded by upscale restaurants and shops to check out after your skate. At night, the rink has beautiful holiday lights and decorations are set up. Lights are strung from large lights around the rink, helping provide a festive feeling for a fun experience.
Reston Town Ice Skating Pavilion: Located in Reston Town Center, this ice rink provides a nice holiday atmosphere with lots of lights, and a rink underneath a pavilion. There are decorated trees with holiday lights around the rink that are beautiful at night. In the town center, there is a large decorated Christmas tree and fountain. While the rink is under a pavilion, it still provides an outdoor rink feel that is perfect to spend time with friends.
If you are looking to get out and ice skate, these options are some of the best spots in our area. Ice skating can be a fun activity in the winter and holiday season, so be sure to take advantage of it while you have the chance.
