The Arlington Turkey Trot: A Thanksgiving Day Tradition
Alex Sakes

The Turkey Trot is the classical footrace that wakes you up on Thanksgiving morning. Arlington’s course has been around since 2006, founded by Pastor Brian Webster and his wife Diane of Christ Church of Arlington. Their goal was to help Arlington residents in need, while also providing a fun event. The standard Turkey Trot is 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) that you can run, walk, or jog.

Over the course of 16 years, the Trot has become part of many Arlington family’s Thanksgiving traditions. Over the years, it has generated over $1 Million to help Arlington County residents in need.

All the funds collected go to 18 local beneficiaries, including Read Early and Daily (READ). READ is a nonprofit organization devoted to giving children the opportunity to read quality books. Another organization the Turkey Trot supports is Young Life, helping teenagers make valuable connections and friendships. Our school has its own Young Life club with over 50 members.

The benefits and contributions provided by Turkey Trot for our Arlington community are immense. This year, there will be an expected 4,000 people in attendance. The race will be held on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28th.
