Reporter Hewitt Ebert is ready for a second year on The Sentry. Entering his senior year, he has high aspirations for this year and college. Ebert joined The Sentry after hearing how great it was from a former Sentry member.
“[Matthew Wagner] was always talking about The Sentry, and how fun it is, and how chill everyone is and how it’s the best teacher ever in it,” Ebert said.
After his first year on The Sentry, as a junior last year, he can definitely say that he has loved it.
“I have had a very fun time since joining,” Ebert said.
Along with being a talented reporter for The Sentry, one thing that truly stands out about Ebert is his love for football. He plays for our school as a nose guard on the defensive line. Ebert also has one favorite sports team: the Buffalo Bills. If you ask him, he will say the Bills are going to win it all this year.
“I like the Bills because my entire dad’s side of the family is from Buffalo, and [my dad] introduced me to football,” Ebert said.
While he enjoys many sports, Ebert mainly follows the Bills as his favorite team.
“I like watching other sports, but in terms of having a favorite team, it’s the Bills,” Ebert said.
Besides football, Ebert also participates on the track and field team for our school.
“I do shot put, which I’ve only done [in] the spring season, but [it is] very fun. We’re looking to get a few more kids from the football team on the track team this year,” Ebert said.
Ebert also likes to play recreational basketball for fun. While he considers himself a poor shooter, he compensates for this with his size while finishing near the basket.
“Since I’m big, I can just body everybody and get my layups in,” Ebert said.
Ebert has a very specific favorite food.
“A good old fashioned cheeseburger cooked medium rare with American cheese on top, tomato, onion and lettuce. The onion is the best thing about it ever,” Ebert said.
Ebert has a wide variety of music interests, but he does not like pop.
“I probably have a playlist for every genre except pop. I hate pop,” Ebert said.
Ebert is also a strong student who is most looking forward to taking Advanced Placement (AP) Research this year as part of the Capstone program. Besides journalism, he considers English to be his favorite subject.
“I really like reading in general. I like annotating things and pulling them apart,” Ebert said.
Ebert likes to focus on writing News and Sports articles for The Sentry. He especially liked the One Day Issue that The Sentry published last year.
“[The One Day Issue] was really fun. We had a solar eclipse that day. That was really interesting,” Ebert said.
The Sentry is excited to have Ebert on the staff for another year. He is looking forward to growing as a writer while covering relevant topics for our school. Ebert is a very talented person who has a bright future after his time on The Sentry.

Entering his second year on staff, Junior Ryan Pericak is more ready than ever to be a part of The Sentry. Pericak has developed skills critical to many aspects of his life and will be a significant team member. If it wasn’t for his freshman year class, Pericak wouldn’t be a part of The Sentry.
“I had [class advisor] Ms. Wiedemann freshman year for English. I really liked that class. I just thought it would be fun, so I applied and got in, which was really exciting,” Pericak said.
Aside from journalism, Pericak does have some other favorite academic subjects.
“History because I think it is the most interesting of all the subjects,” Pericak said.
Apart from History, Pericak has many other interests, including golf. He is a member of our school’s golf team. Additionally, Pericak participates in golf tournaments outside of school. A second sport Pericak is involved in is running.
“I ran a half marathon with my sister.… And I’m running another one next month, so that will be exciting,” Pericak said.
An additional member of Pericak’s family is his pet dog. He has a goldendoodle who has been with Pericaks family for seven years. While he’s seven years old, the goldendoodle acts like he’s much younger.
Pericak enjoys going on vacations with his family. This most recent summer, he was very active.
“I went to Buffalo, Michigan and New Jersey. I was gone most of the summer,” Pericak said.
The majority of Pericaks family being from Buffalo is what makes the city significant to him.
Connecting to his love for golf, Pericaks favorite movie is Happy Gilmore. The humor and theme of the movie mixing together makes it a great movie.
Another form of media that Pericak enjoys is music. While Pericak likes most types of music, his favorite is country. Pericak enjoys listening to many of the subgenres of country music. He listens to so many artists that he can’t think of a favorite.
As Pericak’s high school journey is nearing its end, he is looking at colleges to attend.
“I am starting to look into some colleges. Right now, I really want to go to the University of Virginia. It’s in state and my sister goes there, so it’s a good school,” Pericak said.
Having Pericak on The Sentry is an honor. His wide range of connections through his interests, will continue to help supply The Sentry with new stories and information.
