If you’re looking for Zoe Davis, you can usually find her at a coffee shop. Davis is a third-year reporter, going into her junior year at our school, and she loves to spend time at one of Arlington’s many cafes. Her favorite thing to do at these cafes? Write articles.

“I like to think of ideas for articles, like coffee shop articles, because it means I get to go to coffee shops,” Davis said.

Her love of writing led her to join Journalism freshman year after hearing about The Sentry from one of her sister’s friends. After joining, Davis quickly picked up how to write in each section. She enjoys writing in the Style and Opinion sections due to the freedom in how she can write the articles.

Davis has been doing lacrosse and cross-country since eighth grade and running indoor track since freshman year. She is a part of Montgomery County Elite (MC Elite) Lacrosse, as well.

When not at any practices or games, Davis likes to listen to music: She describes one of her top genres as “indie,” but she’ll listen to almost anything. Some of her favorite bands include Vampire Weekend and Dayglow.

There’s no shortage of Davis’ love for all things indie. She described her favorite country, Liechtenstein, as Switzerland but indie.

“[Liechtenstein] looks like, you know the movie Tangled? … I would start a bakery there,” Davis said.

Baking is one of Davis’ many talents, and her chocolate chip cookies are notorious for their taste in The Sentry. It’s always a great day when she brings in baked goods to share with the class.

While we’re on the topic of food, Davis recommends La Tingeria in Falls Church, calling it the most underrated restaurant in our area.

“It’s this little taco place, I think it’s in Falls Church, it’s near Northside Social,” Davis said.

Though Davis can bake, she doesn’t cook when driving. Her red Toyota Prius stands out in the long line of parked cars along Little Falls Road, and Davis says that her friends often critique her parking.

“I’m not very good. I hit a lot of curbs, and I did run over some cones recently,” Davis said.

Although she’s a self-proclaimed bad driver, The Sentry is lucky to have such a positive and motivated reporter as part of the class, and we’re excited to see all of the articles Davis will write this year.

If your favorite movie in the Cars franchise is the third one, consider yourself an enemy of senior and third-year Reporter Brendan Schmitt.

“It goes Cars 2, Cars 1, then Cars 3. If you have any other order than that, then you’re not a Cars fan,” Schmitt said.

When Schmitt is not watching Disney movies, you can find him running for our school’s cross-country and track teams or going on a hike.

“If I could relive one day of my life, it would be when my family and I visited Yosemite last summer. I would do more hiking this time because last time my family wanted to stop after four miles,” Schmitt said.

All that activity would make any person want to get a sweet treat. Although he doesn’t go often due to the location, one of Schmitt’s favorite dessert places is Sweet Frog. However, you will not catch him eating a boring flavor, like plain tart, as he has a very specific order.

“I put chocolate as the base and then top it with some oreos. I’ll maybe add some Reeses Pieces or M&Ms, some caramel or chocolate syrup and whipped cream. You don’t want anything like gummy or rock candy … but I still put it in there anyway and then complain about it after,” Schmitt said.

While he may not always make the smartest decisions when it comes to frozen yogurt, Schmitt is quite the academic. He’s currently taking AP Chemistry, which is notorious for being one of our school’s most difficult classes. He says that his goal is to major in Chemistry in college.

“In the future, I want to go into research and development, probably in a lab for developing pharmaceuticals or vaccines,” Schmitt said.

Maybe it’s good he doesn’t want to go into any type of political career, because he has some pretty controversial takes. His most divisive stance? His hatred for guacamole.

“I think it’s really bad and has no flavor,” Schmitt said.

Being a guac hater isn’t the only thing that makes Schmitt unique. He is also a triplet, with one brother and one sister.

“I wouldn’t say that there are a whole lot of downsides to being one,” Schmitt said.

However, there is one misconception people often have.

“People think I’m exactly like my brother, but we’re completely different. Our personalities and how we act are a lot different. I’m a lot more outgoing, and he’s a lot quieter,” Schmitt said.

These extroverted qualities combined with his love for writing are part of why Schmitt is such a valuable member of The Sentry. We are so excited to see what he accomplishes this year.
