Lauren Snyder and Andrea Henriquez

Strolling down the halls, senior Lauren Snyder looks like any other student; she has both headphones in and is living in the moment. There is a wide variety of things she could be listening to, such as the soundtrack Hamilton, or the alternative band, Green Day. On the other hand, she might be jamming to her life anthem.

“One of my favorite songs is ‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers. It’s just a really good song that I love a lot. It’s my go-to song,” Snyder said.

Along with music, Synder loves the entertainment industry. She loves any crime procedural show such as NCIS. Her favorite movie may be the tear-jerker Brooklyn or the thrilling Ocean’s Eleven trilogy. She also is very passionate about Disney movies. When asked which Disney Princess she would love to be, there was quickly a clear choice.

“I would like to be Mulan. I just think what she did was really, really cool. Just saving the whole country [China] when she was younger than we are would be cool,” Snyder said.

Besides watching her favorite princess save China, Snyder’s childhood was filled with much travel. Due to her father working in the U.S. Department of Justice, she has lived in California; Fredericksburg, Virginia; Nevada and Turkey. In Turkey, she experienced her awkward middle school years which she would describe as basically memories of “bad fashion and hair decisions.” A struggle that nearly every high schooler has to block out.

Today, Snyder can be seen with a slight hint of green dyed at the tips of her hair. Originally dyed a dark blue in August, time has made her hair more similar to the pine shade. She considers her hair as a big mark of who she is. In fact, when asked what dog breed she is most similar to, she picked nearly any dog with oodles of hair. Her two favorites came down to a golden retriever and an australian shepherd.

Outside of school, Lauren babysits for her neighbors as well as does kickboxing and jiu jitsu. The two sports are supposedly the most exciting part of her day. Another large factor of her day would be the college application process. Snyder is looking into around six schools for her potential home away from home. She is hoping to get into the competitive nursing programs once she graduates. Another dream on the top of her bucket list would be traveling.

“I would like to go to the Himalayas at some point. I wouldn’t necessarily want to hike up Mount Everest but walk a couple feet up it so I could say that I climbed it. I would also like to go to the Amazon rainforest. My biggest wish might be more towards Eastern Asia or the Middle East. I would like to travel as much as I can,” Snyder said.

Another more unrealistic wish would be to one day have the superpowers of either understanding any language or breathing underwater. Snyder also explained that she would love to have dinner with Cleopatra due to her past obsession with the Egyptian Pharaoh. Lastly, I asked Snyder the question on everyone’s minds: Is Donald Trump’s hair real?

“No, its not real. It is it’s own entity. It is disconnected from his body,” Snyder said.

All in all, Lauren Snyder is a very interesting and kind person to just sit down and have a chat with. Kickboxing her way into her last year, her articles will contain her witty memorable lines that will leave students laughing and remembering her legacy in the Sentry.

Senior reporter Andrea Henriquez has had the writing bug since she was a young kid. After all, what else would motivate her to write on her walls with crayon?

“It was kinda bad,” Henriquez said.

The walls were spared eventually, and Henriquez got really into song lyrics. Musicians like The Beatles spiked her interest in symbolic writing, and she won a poem competition in elementary school.

“It was like this book made of all these poems from kids across the U.S. … and I got in! It was like the coolest thing ever,” Henriquez said.

Besides being a home decorator and a published author, young Henriquez really enjoyed the comic Calvin and Hobbes.

“I thought it was funny and I had a stuffed animal as a kid named Natasha … she was kinda like Hobbes,” Henriquez said.

Older Henriquez still dreams big and is looking forward to traveling to Greece next summer with her family. She loves Europe and has already traveled to Spain, France and Italy.

Besides travelling the world, Henriquez still enjoys her downtime. One of her favorite pastimes watching movies.

“I watch movies religiously and it’s really hard to pick [a favorite] … I like anything funny or horror,” Henriquez said.

A few movies at the top of this movie enthusiast’s list include Dead Poets Society, The Great Gatsby, Cast Away or anything with Leonardo DiCaprio or Tom Hanks in it. Right now, Stuck in Love is her go to Netflix movie.

Henriquez also enjoys music and said that if she could get away with any crime, she would like to get away with sneaking into concerts.

“I love concerts and they do add up very quickly. I go to a lot and by the end of the year it’s hundreds of dollars,” Henriquez said.

This year is Henriquez’s last year on the Sentry staff as she will be graduating this year. She does not know exactly know what she wants to do, but Henriquez knows that she wants to help people and get involved in foreign affairs or government. We wish all the best to her and her ambitions.
