Meet Maddie Dettling, the style editor working her second year on the newspaper staff. Dettling has had a great experience working on staff and appreciates her role.

“[I] get to change people’s perspective and connect with people,” Dettling said.

Dettling is always drawn to adrenaline rushes and excitement, which is why she loves roller coasters. The first roller coaster she rode was a traumatizing old one, but now she sticks to the newer rides and away from the old, rickety ones. Dettling prefers to hang while enjoying the ride versus sitting.

“You don’t feel the drop as much,” Dettling said.

Despite her adventurous nature and fearlessness, Dettling has a huge fear of spiders.  Roller coasters and heights are fine, but when she spots a spider in her room, it is not so fine.

During her downtime, Dettling enjoys apple picking and hiking with her family. After apple picking, she and her family like to make delicious apple pies. This is a family tradition that is close to Dettling’s heart.

Like any other teenager, when asked what her dream car was, she did not have to think about her answer.

“My dream car is that car in the music video ‘Crazy’ by Aerosmith,” Dettling said. For those who are not familiar with this music video, the car featured is a 1994 Ford Mustang Convertible.

As a senior, Dettling has thought a lot about what she would like to major in when she gets to college, and as of now Journalism is her top pick. She is still figuring out what colleges she wants to apply to. Dettling looks forward to her last year on staff and is excited for her future.

Guess this Sentry staff member: Self described as athletic, loud, yet quiet and would take coffee over tea any day. It’s sophomore Alison Jones, of course! She is brand new to the staff this year as a photographer, and is ready to capture the life of Yorktown through the camera lense.

Jones’s description of herself is spot on: On top of living the fulltime life of a student, she also plays softball and basketball for recreational teams.

When asked if she would rather scale a forty foot building sans harness or swim with Great White sharks in the wild, Jones needed some time to think. After some time debating the predictability of sharks, she found her answer to the million dollar question.

“Sharks. I don’t trust myself to scale a forty-foot building with no gear,” Jones said.

After a summer spent relaxing on the beach in Mexico with her family, it is no surprise that she would be more comfortable in the ocean.

Embarrassing moments are hard to forget, so when prompted, Jones immediately recalled a time when she was, for lack of a better term, very out of it.

“My most embarrassing moments always happen in front of my family: I was at my cousin’s first birthday party, and we were sitting around the table playing cards, when I asked what we were there to celebrate,” Jones said.

Now, for the hard-hitting facts. If she had to be either really big (like Jack and the Beanstalk big) or , Jones would be…neither.

“I don’t want to be a giant, but I don’t want to be stepped on either! It depends, I think I’d rather be small…no wait, big! Its really a lose-lose either way, so neither.”

Her celebrity crush is none other than the High School Musical heartthrob.

“It changes depending on which movies I’ve watched lately, but Zac Efron is my constant,” Jones said.

Most people are defined by their catchphrase, and Jones is no different. In the interest of staying parent-friendly, Jones made up her own saying to use when things get rough: “Fudge monkeys.”

And as for her worst enemy?

“My future. I know what I want to do, but getting there is hard. It’s scary, because you want to grow up, but at the same time, you don’t,” Jones said. “My bed and my house is so comfortable, I don’t want to leave it!”
