The life of a high school athlete is one that often provokes feelings of stress, but senior Anders Juengst is only grateful for his experience playing ultimate frisbee. It makes sense that Juengst is the team captain this year, because not only has he been playing ultimate for almost five years, but he also actually helped start the Yorktown Ultimate team. In addition, he helped lead his team to victory during the 2015 Virginia State championships. Juengst is an highly valued and remarkably dedicated member of his team, and stands out as both a star player and dependable teammate.

Q: How long have you been playing on the Yorktown ultimate team?

A: I’ve been playing ultimate since eighth grade, and I helped start Yorktown Ultimate my freshman year.

Q: How did you start playing frisbee?

A: I first became interested through a friend, and I first played at a Capital Ultimate Camp in the summer before 8th grade.

Q: What is the best part about being an athlete and playing frisbee?

A: To me, the best parts about playing frisbee are the fierce competition and bonds I’ve made with my teammates.

Q: Do you play year-round?

A: Yes, high school season takes up most of the school year, but in the summer, during the club ultimate season, I play for DC Swingvote, a mixed (co-ed) team from the area. Last year, we won the U-19 Youth National Championships.

Q: What motivates you?

A: I love watching game and highlight footage of the best teams and players around the world. Because ultimate is a small but growing community, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and even play with some of the sport’s biggest stars.

Q: Do you think you’ll continue playing frisbee after high school?

A: For sure. I’ve really fallen in love with the Ultimate and its people, and I want to continue my improvement as a player into college and beyond.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of being part of a team?

A: My favorite aspect of being part of the team is knowing that all 18 guys have my back, on and off the field.

Q: Describe the most memorable moment or event you’ve experienced through playing frisbee.

A: My most memorable moment playing ultimate has to have been the last point of the 2015 State championship game. Simon, an exchange student who had been playing for less than a year, caught a floaty pass to bring in the victory. After losing the state final two years in a row, taking the win was an amazing experience.

Q: What would you say/what advice would you give to someone who may be interested in playing frisbee?

A: To find out more information about Yorktown Ultimate, visit our website: www.yula-ulti.org We are always on the lookout for new players; anyone and everyone is invited out to play.
