Emily Calvert and Natalie Poole

Emily Calvert and Natalie Poole

Senior year can sure get stressful, but senior Natalie Poole knows how to “Shake it Off”. Poole admitted to secretly jamming out to Taylor Swift’s hit song when no one was watching. Poole is no doubt going to be a great asset to The Sentry and quickly sided with gold fish in the ongoing debate between cheez-its and goldfish, so clearly she is an intelligent young adult.

Poole’s easy-going and fun personality came out in conversation as she was constantly smiling and decided that the musical instrument she is the most alike is the guitar.

“Well, the guitar is fairly small and so am I so I would have to go with that,” said Poole.

Although Poole has a twin sister, she is definitely a personality of her own. Poole self-described herself with the three words almost any high school student easily relates too: weird, clumsy, and tired. She also decided, without hesitation, that clumsiness would have to be her greatest weakness. However, this clumsiness is not just falling up the stairs or occasionally dropping her phone.

“One time I almost got hit by a bus. I was in Charleston and didn’t realize that pedestrians don’t have the right of way. The bus was literally a foot away from me,” said Poole.

Luckily, Poole made it out without a scratch and is now looking forward to a great senior year and first year on staff. After high school, Poole is planning on attending college. Although she did not give a definite answer as to where, with her personality and academic excellence, it will definitely be somewhere great.

After surviving nearly biking off a cliff when she was young, Emily Calvert leads the life most teenagers dream of. When she walks she has a big smile on her face and a hop in her step. Her confidence shines as she talks. When asked what plans she had for her future, Calvert proudly proclaimed her dreams of traveling the world. Calvert has already begun to fulfil this dream as she has already traveled to Kenya (where she has lived two times in her life) and to her family’s vineyard in New Zealand.

As a junior, Calvert has already made an impact on the world; she is the Vice President of Best Buddies, a teen ambassador at Smithsonian National Museum for African Art and is planning to create a club, Girl Up, to raise awareness about women in third world countries.

When asked her opinion on school, she said, “I hate that I don’t like school.”  Along with school, Calvert dislikes the taste of plain tomatoes; despite this, she is a self-described vegetarian. She also loves elephants, and identifies them as her spirit animal.

Calvert has many favorites; she prefers Coke over Pepsi, loves the color turquoise, the book Love Does by Bob Goff, the movie My Sister’s Keeper and red Skittles. However, when it comes to Leonardo DiCaprio movies she cannot choose a favorite “whenever I can look at him I am happy,” said Calvert.

Calvert’s favorite thing that has ever happened to her is moving back to Kenya in the third grade. “Kenya is so cool,” she said. Her least favorite thing was when Zayn Malik left the band One Direction.

When asked why she decided to become a reporter Calvert smiled and said, “My brother is the main reason why I joined [newspaper]”. Calvert has a lot to thank her brother for as he is not only her inspiration for becoming a reporter, but he also saved her from biking off a cliff on her family’s New Zealand vineyard.

Her kind spirit truly shined through when she described herself and her involvement in Best Buddies. Calvert has a happy and bubbly spirit that truly makes her a great reporter for The Sentry.
