It is no secret that our school is chock-full of talent. From football stars to people playing guitars, we have it all.

Claire Flynt is a senior with exceptional musical talent. While she mainly focuses on her piano playing, she has also dabbled in guitar, flute, ukulele and organ as well as singing.

Her piano training began when she was five years old, and she has been practicing diligently ever since. This practice begins with her warming up with scales and other technical exercises. She then moves on to practicing her music, which is primarily classical music. Besides these parts of her routine, she also practices ear training and includes music theory in her training sessions. This training may seem rigorous, but it is very rewarding for Flynt.

“My favorite thing about piano is the constant challenge and how there will always be something to learn. You can never practice too much or run out of things to work on,” said Flynt.

Recording music is the dream of many musicians. Although Flynt is still working on recording on a professional level, she has made major progress in creating some recordings of her original songs.

But Flynt is not just a solo act, and all this hard work could not possibly all happen outside of school. At school she is involved in the musical singing group, The Madrigals. Not only is she involved in this group, but she has taken her musical education to the next level by conducting an independent study on songwriting.

Flynt has been involved in many musical productions as well.

“One of my favorite things to do is perform,” said Flynt.

Her performance resume includes two performances in the Yorktown Variety Show. Flynt describes her experience as “a blast both times.”

Outside of school she has done several open mic nights and even a few paid performances. She recently played at Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse in DC. Flynt performed as part of The 9 Songwriter Series. While performing live may seem intimidating, she gets a real thrill from it.

“I get nervous to perform, but the payoff is always there,” said Flynt.

Looking to the future, Flynt plans on keeping music as a big part of her life. While she has not applied to many music colleges, by joining clubs and keeping up with her rehearsal, Flynt will be musically involved wherever she goes.

Flynt is an exceptional artist and manages to stand out from many talented students. To hear some of her work, be sure to check her out on her YouTube channel, “cmflynt.” Otherwise, stay tuned for her next live performance!
