Drumming to Success

Anyone who has arrived at school early enough to hear the live music in the atrium knows the outstanding talent that the band and orchestra have to offer. In particular, this year’s drumline boasts an impressive accomplishment. They won first place in their class at an inter-county competition.

Drumline is the percussion section of the marching band; it is composed of the “battery,” or choreographed drumline, and the front ensemble, consisting of various other percussion instruments that play with the drums. As the most theatrical section of the marching band, drumline performs independently from the marching band. It serves as an after-school commitment for those who wish to focus on percussion.

On Saturday, March 29, the drumline performed at a competition hosted at Freedom High School. The drumline was the only group to perform for Arlington County. After an exceptional performance in the preliminary round, which determined the order in which the different drumlines performed for the finals, the drummers were awarded the last position. Do not be fooled: the last position is reserved for the best performance of each class. After some last-minute rehearsal time, the drumline entered the final round.

“Finals was probably our best run of the season,” said freshman Erin Sweeney, who plays the synthesizer, or keyboard, in the drumline. “We ended up getting gold for our class.”

As opposed to the band and orchestra classes offered during school, drumline rehearses outside of school three times per week. Being in the marching band is not a requirement to perform with the drumline.

“It was a really fun experience…it was nice to get to incorporate music and band with theatrics,” said Sweeney.

These talented Patriots have done an impressive job representing Yorktown and Arlington. Congratulations to the drumline for their outstanding achievement.
