The service clubs here at Yorktown work hard every year in order to raise money for various organizations and foundations. But, for the first time, all of the service clubs in the school are coming together to raise money for one very important organization: Stop Hunger Now.

Stop Hunger Now is a global organization that raises money to create meals for poor and hungry families all around the word.  They have conducted meal packaging operations worldwide since 2005 and have packaged over 100 million meals for children and adults alike.

Shari Benites, the minority achievement coordinator and director for the center for leadership and public service, and Stephanie Meadows, a Health teacher and administrator with the Student Government Association (SGA), are heading the operation to raise money for Stop Hunger Now.

“Ms. Meadows and I decided to [raise money for Stop Hunger Now] because it was a way for us to get different clubs working together to do one project,” said Benites.

The Key Club, YHS LIONS, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), SGA, Sister Circle, Latina Leading Ladies and International Club are all working together to raise $2,500 for Stop Hunger Now.  That $2,500 goes to making 10,000 meals for hungry families around the world.  All of the meals will be packed on May 10 in the cafeteria, and any member of the community is encouraged to reach out and help with packing the meals.

“Students can get involved in any of the clubs that are working with Stop Hunger Now.  They can also come into volunteer on the morning that we are bagging all the food, because we are going to need a lot of people to help,” said Zoe Taylor, junior and co-president of Key Club.

All of the clubs are working tirelessly to donate to the fund.  Some have gone beyond the stereotypical bake sale and have come up with creative ideas to raise the money.

“[International Club] has done a few bake sales and we are planning to make rubber bracelets to sell. On May second we are having International Night, and the money we get from selling tickets, we plan to contribute to Stop Hunger Now,” said sophomore Jenisha Chudal, a member of International Club and YHS LIONS.

“YHS LIONS has sold taquitos, and we are planning to sell them again,” said Chudal.

“We are planning on raising the money through bake sales. When it gets warmer out, we are going to try to do some car washes as well,” said Taylor.

Benites and Meadows are excited to work with the different clubs in unison, and are happy that the students and other administrators involved are as enthusiastic as they are.

“I love helping people and doing things that could make the community a better place.  Also the issue of hunger itself is a big deal. Many people are going through it, and if there is anything to help those needs, I love to do it,” said Chudal.

It is easy to see that everyone involved is eager to help Stop Hunger now and those who benefit from their philanthropy.  Keep a look out for this worthy cause and do not hesitate to contact Benites, Meadows or any other student or administrator involved to see how students can help out.
