These first two weeks of school have been tough on all returning students. It is difficult to be thrust back into school six hours a day for anyone but, especially after spending your vacation time in a relaxing, tropical island. This was the case for sophomore Nina Rutzen. This past summer, she traveled to a beautiful resort in Vanuatu. For those unaware, Vanuatu is a small island off the coast of Australia. Rutzen greatly enjoyed the experience and would classify the island as her new favorite vacation destination.

“The resort was super nice and then we’d get to go into the city and see what it’s really like and experience the culture and everything,” Rutzen said.

When asked where she would time travel to if she could go anywhere, Rutzen chose the future because she is excited about all the many possibilities it holds.

“I mean I like having my phone and I’m excited to see how technology advances and everything,” Rutzen said.

Speaking of the future, Rutzen hopes that some day she will work in social justice. That is  why she enjoys being a part of Best Buddies so much, as it relates to what she hopes will someday become a career.

If there were to be a movie created about Rutzen, she would want her character to be played by Mindy Kaling.

“I love her so much, I love The Mindy Project, everything about her is so great. She is my idol,” Rutzen said.

The movie might also feature a koala bear because if Rutzen were to take on an animal form, that is the animal she would most likely be.

“They just get to sleep all the time and are super chill,” Rutzen said.

Rutzen is new to The Sentry this year but she is not new to writing. In fact, it  has been a favored pastime of hers since middle school.

“Ever since sixth grade I’ve loved writing stories,” Ruzen said.

Rutzen is a smart, funny girl and she will make a terrific addition to The Sentry Staff.

Junior Maggie Keane’s laugh and smile are contagious. She is a family girl who loves to reflect on her past experiences. Some memories that stand out to Keane are her family vacations; specifically going to Cape Cod. This location has played a huge role throughout her entire life. She continues to back as a junior in high school she compares it to what it was like as a child.

“Going back there is very fun, meaning and sentimental,” Keane said.

Her whole life has been about theater and writing. She continues to do theater at school and, as part of The Sentry staff, she continues to write for the public. Another way Keane expresses herself if by writing in her journal, which is filled with short stories about her past.

“Having a way to remember things and look back … it’s a cool little memory box,” Keane said.

Maggie considers herself to be an embarrassing person. Choosing her most embarrassing moment was quite a challenge. After some careful thought, Maggie chose one moment in third grade to look back on and laugh about. She remembers playing kickball while wearing a long skirt. Right as she hit the ball her skirt fell down in front of everyone.

“I always look back on that and cringe,” Keane said.

When asked what her favorite subject is she quickly responded with Advanced Placement Psychology. Maggie loves to learn about the world around her and why things happen the way they do. Specifically, she wants to know more about why people take certain actions and make certain choices.

“Its interesting to learn about the innerworkings of the mind,” Keane said.

Maggie is super excited to be on The Sentry staff and have a great start to junior year.
