Who doesn’t love a fair? This spring, Yorktown will be hosting their annual Spring Fair on Friday, April 26, from 3 pm to 5 pm on the walkway between the baseball and softball fields (or in the cafeteria if it rains).  The fair will feature many fun activities such as face painting, free barbecue and desserts, raffle entry, carnival-type booths and even a moon bounce.  Last year’s Spring Fair was a tremendous success and this year promises to be even better.

If you have not already heard about the fair, you soon will.  The fair is being advertised through promos on The Dailies, fliers, announcements and T-shirts.  The Exec Board, who is running the fair, would like to have as many students and clubs as possible attend the fair.  It is not only a great social event, but all proceeds from the fair will go towards helping the students.  Also, with upcoming finals, AP exams and SAT’s, the Spring Fair is the perfect outlet for students who are looking to take their minds off of school and have a good time.

Senior class president Tori Travers, who is helping organize the fair, has good reason to look forward to this upcoming event.

“Personally, as a senior, the number of times I get to see my friends and peers outside of class is dwindling, so it’s kind of nice to informally get together in a relaxed environment,” said Travers.

The Spring Fair was an idea put together by the Exec Board not solely to raise money, but as a stress reliever and to bring the student body closer together.  With that said, the various booths that are set up have been known to generate income for the clubs and organizations participating.  This year, even more clubs are expected to take part in the fair.  The Student Government Association has also been known to set up a booth at the fair and to host activities such as a cake walk, which they did two years ago, and face painting last year.

“The turnout should be fantastic,” said health teacher Stephanie Meadows. “For the past few years we have had a few hundred people.”

Travers is also anticipating another large attendance, much like last year.

“I’m hoping a lot of people will come to the fair.  Last year was extremely successful and it was such a beautiful day that people seemed to enjoy it a lot. I hope we can replicate that turnout,” said Travers.

Unlike last year’s Spring Fair, this year’s fair will likely be catered by Backyard Barbeque, instead of having the teachers grill the food.  There will also be more surprises in the raffle this year, to accommodate the larger number of entries.  Instead of having one iPad mini as a prize, the raffle will feature items such as ten tickets to Rebounders, a local trampoline park, so that more people can enjoy the raffle.   Although the Exec Board is still arranging the logistics of the fair, it appears to be coming together with all of the new attractions and delicious food that the Exec Board has planned.

“All students should attend the fair.  It is free, after school and a great way to relax as the school year winds down,” said Meadows. “I hope to see you all at the fair.”

Travers, like Meadows, feels that everyone should go to the fair.

“Ultimately it’s a nice opportunity, aside from sporting events, for the school to bond as a whole,” said Travers, “And hey, free food!”
