When first meeting senior Emma Thurman, most are struck by how sweet and comforting she is. However, when Thurman steps onto the lacrosse field, she transforms into a strong and competitive athlete. Always a team player, Thurman modestly spreads the glory of an impressive lacrosse career among all her teammates, but she deserves recognition for how passionately she plays her sport.

Q: What first got you interested in lacrosse?

A: I thought it was a really interesting sport, and my older sister played, so I just picked it up.

Q: How do you manage all your time?

A: Sports have actually helped me manage my time. During sports seasons, I know I have to practice for a certain amount of time, and then I do my homework. Then, on weekends, I have time for friends. So, it is actually helps, for me at least, to have structure.

Q: What is the atmosphere like on your team?

A: It has always been pretty good, but this year we have an especially nice group of girls. I met my two best friends through lacrosse and we’re all captains this year, so it’s a lot of fun.

Q: Why have you stuck with lacrosse for so long?

A:  I think I’m coming up on seven years. My first couple years were a little rough because the lacrosse team was tough to get used to, but once I got used to it, I’ve loved every second of it.

Q: Are there any particular skills you have had to learn since you have started playing lacrosse?

A: A responsibility for my stuff. I always need my goggles, my mouth guard and my stick. You always need to have your equipment because you can’t play without it.

Q: Who has supported you and helped to motivate you?

A: It definitely comes from my parents. It sounds cheesy, but they’re my biggest fans in everything–they’re really supportive. My dad can be harsh on playing tough, but I know he’s always honest.

Q: What is your favorite part about playing lacrosse?

A: My favorite part is being a part of a team. I’ve always really liked the team-minded aspect of it, and you make a bunch of new friends throughout the season.

Q: Do you want to play lacrosse in college, and if so where?

A: At one point I was considering it, but I got into the University of Virginia and that’s where I’m going. They have such a great team that I don’t think I’ll make it. I might play club, but I don’t know. I’ll see once I’m settled in.

Q: Is there any advice you would like to give to future lacrosse players or people who are interested in playing lacrosse?

A: For people considering trying out, do it, because it’s a great sport even if you’ve never played before–it’s something that you can get good at. For people who play, appreciate your time. I’m starting to realize that this is my senior year, and it’s kind of the end of my time playing competitively.

Q: Is it worth it to put everything into this sport?

A: I’ve definitely had my ups and downs with the sport. I wanted to quit at times, but it has definitely been worth it to stick it out, especially as a senior this year. It’s awesome to know that I’ve played my five years at Yorktown, and you really get a sense of respect from your coaches and other players on the field, and it’s something else, it’s something I’ve never experienced before.
