Stevie Picot and Julie Gilbertsen

Mother Teresa may be one of the most well-known charity workers of all time, but it would seem that junior Julie Gilbertsen is doing the best she can to surpass her. Gilbertsen is just a normal girl who plays tennis and watches Friends, but she loves to help people. She is probably the only teenager ever who listed volunteer work as a hobby rather than a responsibility.

“I would want to be known for charity work if I became rich and famous one day,” said Gilbertsen.

The accomplished Gilbertsen will be running the Habitat for Humanity Club this year as a junior. Although that will undoubtedly be a huge responsibility and time commitment, she plans to find time to play tennis and read and write for fun. Thanks to her passion for writing, Gilbertsen will be a tremendous addition to the Sentry staff.

“I love to read and write, and I was going to join the previous two years but I didn’t know much about it,” said Gilbertsen.

Now a member, she hopes to add her own personal touch to the paper.

As far as her taste for entertainment goes, Gilbertsen is very relatable. She worships the cult TV show Friends and is as obsessed with Taylor Swift as every other girl her age. Her favorite bands include The Wombats and The Neighbourhood, the latter of which is best know for the hit song ‘Sweater Weather’.

Finally, if Gilbertsen could have a superpower, she would choose the ability to telecommunicate, a choice which strays from the usual answer of being able to fly. This is an exceptional choice for a girl with exceptional interests.

Self-described as “smart, a little weird and friendly,” junior reporter Stevie Picot has all the right qualities of a stellar reporter for The Sentry. Foremost among them is his passion for writing; it has always been his favorite part of English class. This is Picot’s second year on staff, and he values the freedom and variety that comes along with writing for the newspaper.

Not only does Picot excel in English, he also studies Spanish and is a member of the Spanish Honors club. While he values his school work and studies, you can also catch him on the field this year playing varsity football and lacrosse. Football seems to be a common theme in this athlete’s life. When asked about his favorite high school memory, he reminisced about a recent game.

“Last week I played in the varsity football game, and that was really awesome. It was a cool experience,” Picot said.

And for what his favorite sports team is, he almost instantaneously replied with, “the Pittsburgh Steelers,” as if it was not even a question. Given that Picot plays two sports and participates in extra-curriculars, it is understandable that his ideal day would be spent “not doing very much, just relaxing, eating some good food and watching football.” He took a minute to envision what “good food” he would choose to eat on his perfect, dream day, and the verdict: too many options, too little time.

Picot certainly has high aspirations, which is a good thing if he ever wants to be as successful as Bill Gates, who he would choose to switch places with for a day if given the option. However, if he does not become a billionaire, and instead finds himself winning $20 million in the lottery, he would not spend it all on his own material possessions. The first thing he would buy is a nice beach house for his family.

If he ever came across a time-machine, he would want travel to the future to see what it would be like. He might just find himself living as a billionaire, relaxing in his beach house, maybe even playing for a professional sports team. Hopefully by that time classmate Alex Brandolino will have stopped “[trying] to take pictures of people,” which is Picot’s biggest pet-peeve.
