Peter Chang’s Review

Peter Chang’s Review

Oriental Gourmet has always been a staple of Arlington cuisine, but recently it has been replaced with a new Chinese restaurant, Peter Chang’s.  Oriental Gourmet was by no means top quality food, yet it satisfied a craving for Asian cuisine while also being easy on the pocketbook.  This reporter decided to find out if the new Chinese hot spot lived up to the hype.

At first glance, Peter Chang’s is significantly more expensive than its predecessor, but if that means better food, so be it.  Not only are its specific menu items more expensive, but they charge for refills, a whopping four dollars, which is hard on the tight budget of a high schooler.  A lunch for two, (two entrees, two drinks, and an order of egg rolls) ended up costing over 50 dollars.

Prices are not the only concern when going to Peter Chang’s; the menu itself is limited.  The Shrimp Lo Mein was adequate, but also a hard dish to mess up.  What was most concerning was the lack of traditional dishes such as sesame chicken and orange beef.  Furthermore, the dishes they did offer were incredibly spicy.  The Pan Fried Salmon on Hot Iron Plate had only two chili peppers next to it, and the predominant flavor was that of fire.  I am not someone who particularly likes spicy food, but this dish was more than I asked for without much warning.

The final blow is that Peter Chang’s does not deliver, and does not plan to.  For the years I frequented Oriental Gourmet, I only walked into their restaurant a maximum of five times.  When I want Chinese, I want it delivered to my door and I want to eat it for the next few days for lunch.  Above all, I do not want to sit in a restaurant to eat it or pry myself away from Netflix, throw on some sweatpants and pick it up from the restaurant.

Overall, I would not particularly recommend Peter Chang’s.  Perhaps if you enjoy very spicy food, or do not mind paying more than usual for typical Chinese dishes, you will like it.   I suspect that Peter Chang’s will not last very long in Harrison Center, but maybe they will make some changes and stick around.
