Valentine’s Day is finally here. It seems as if pink and red hearts have been nagging us to mail cards and buy candy for months, but now there is no time left to waste. Still trying to pull together Valentine’s Day plans? It is not too late. Whether it is spent at home with a romantic comedy or out at a fancy restaurant, these tips will guarantee a perfect Valentine’s Day experience.

Sophomore Sissy Davis has some suggestions for students stuck on what to do for Valentine’s Day. When asked to suggest some good Valentine’s Day gift ideas, Davis responded,

“A great gift for anyone is food. You should definitely bake cookies for your loved ones.”

Junior Chris Oltorik agrees with Davis and thinks that everyone would love to receive something sweet on Valentine’s Day.

“Give someone chocolate and flowers. But mostly chocolate,” joked Oltorik.

Davis believes that Valentine’s Day should be relaxed and fun, but she still thinks it is important to let friends and family know they are appreciated.

“This is Valentine’s Day. This is all about cherishing (others) so really make them feel special,” said Davis.

Oltorik also recommends spending time and effort selecting gifts for loved ones.

“At Target they sell the (themed valentines) and kids give (the same) one to everyone. Don’t give people those,” warned Oltorik.

When asked whether homemade or store-bought gifts are better, Oltorik said that the gift itself is not what is important.

“It doesn’t matter as long as it’s thoughtful,” said Oltorik.

Davis also suggested some special activities to do, whether you have a Valentine or not.

“You can go to the florist and get some beautiful roses, and lots of great movies are

coming out around Valentine’s Day,” said Davis.

The most stressful aspect of Valentine’s Day for many students is finding the perfect outfit. However, Davis said that clothing is not as important as some people might think. Davis advises students not to overthink their appearance, and to just enjoy the holiday.

“Don’t get hung up on what you’re going to wear because if your boyfriend is really your boyfriend then he’ll love you for who you are,” said Davis.

As a final thought, Davis has a tip for outgoing and creative Valentine’s Day lovers.

“Serenading your loved ones is always a good idea,” joked Davis.

There seems to be a consensus that Valentine’s Day is better when done thoughtfully. As Oltorik said,

“If you have someone that you’re going to give a Valentine to, make it something important.”

So which is preferable? A funny, but impersonal, virtual Twitter valentine that proclaims, “I like you a latte” or a homemade card with a box of chocolates? I think everyone knows the answer to that. So resist the urge to just tell loved ones, “I Obamacare about you” this Valentine’s Day with a picture of Barack Obama wearing sunglasses. Instead, go for that sincere gesture that will make them remember this Valentine’s Day for years to come.
